Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for selecting one or more network-connected devices to provide device functions required by an event. A media guidance application may detect an event in which a user is currently engaged. The media guidance application may identify a set of device capabilities associated with the event. The media guidance application may search, within a plurality of network-connected devices of the user, to identify one or more devices that enable functions corresponding to the set of device capabilities to be perceptible to the user, and the media guidance application may instruct the identified one or more devices to provide the functions corresponding to the set of device capabilities associated with the event.

Claims (47)

1 . A method comprising:

detecting a user input of a user from at least one of a plurality of network-connected devices;

determining, based on the detected user input, an event in which the user is currently engaged, wherein the event is of an event type;

selecting, from the plurality of network-connected devices, a first set of devices having functions corresponding to functions associated with the event type;

determining, from the first set of devices, a second set of devices that are perceptible to the user;

retrieving media content associated with the event type; and

causing the media content to be played on the second set of devices.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a location of the user, wherein determining the second set of devices that are perceptible to the user is based on the location of the user.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the location of the user is based on a captured image of the user, wherein the captured image is analyzed to determine a position of the user with relation to at least one of the second set of devices.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the location of the user is based on a triangulation of audio signals detected from the user captured from.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the event type is at least one of an emergency, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation event, a Heimlich maneuver event, a cleaning event, a cooking event, a household event, a laundry event, a sports event, an exercise event, a cultural event, a holiday event, a celebration event, a walking event, a driving event, a repair event, a news event, or a child event.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein selecting the first set of devices comprises:

comparing metadata associated with the event type with metadata associated functions of each of the plurality of network-connected devices; and

determining which devices of the plurality of network-connected devices corresponds to event type.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting a request for device capabilities from each of the first set of devices; and

receiving a response that includes the device capabilities from each of the first set of devices,

wherein determining the second set of devices further includes selecting devices having device capabilities that are associated with the media content.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the device capabilities include playback of video, playback of audio, display of a hologram, and control of an internet of things (IOT) device.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein transmitting the request for device capabilities from each of the first set of devices comprises transmitting the request to each device using an Application Programming Interface (“API”).

10 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

determining the event type based on transmitting an identifier corresponding to the event to a database comprising metadata associated with the identifier and corresponding event types.

11 . A system for selecting one or more network-connected devices to provide device functions required by an event, the system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

detect a user input of a user from at least one of a plurality of network-connected devices;

determine, based on the detected user input, an event in which the user is currently engaged, wherein the event is of an event type;

select, from the plurality of network-connected devices, a first set of devices having functions corresponding to functions associated with the event type;

determine, from the first set of devices, a second set of devices that are perceptible to the user;

retrieve media content associated with the event type; and

cause the media content to be played on the second set of devices.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine a location of the user, wherein determining the second set of devices that are perceptible to the user is based on the location of the user.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein determining the location of the user is based on a captured image of the user, wherein the captured image is analyzed to determine a position of the user with relation to at least one of the second set of devices.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein determining the location of the user is based on a triangulation of audio signals detected from the user captured from.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the event type is at least one of an emergency, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation event, a Heimlich maneuver event, a cleaning event, a cooking event, a household event, a laundry event, a sports event, an exercise event, a cultural event, a holiday event, a celebration event, a walking event, a driving event, a repair event, a news event, or a child event.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein selecting the first set of devices comprises:

comparing metadata associated with the event type with metadata associated functions of each of the plurality of network-connected devices; and

determining which devices of the plurality of network-connected devices corresponds to event type.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

transmit a request for device capabilities from each of the first set of devices; and

receive a response that includes the device capabilities from each of the first set of devices,

wherein determining the second set of devices further includes selecting devices having device capabilities that are associated with the media content.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the device capabilities include playback of video, playback of audio, display of a hologram, and control of an internet of things (IOT) device.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein transmitting the request for device capabilities from each of the first set of devices comprises transmitting the request to each device using an Application Programming Interface (“API”).

20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine the event type based on transmitting an identifier corresponding to the event to a database comprising metadata associated with the identifier and corresponding event types.
