Egress and private router detection in internet protocol version 6 (IPV6)
Systems and methods for determining the egress of networks and identifying routers associated with networks and ISPs include determining an egress of a network; determining a prefix associated with the egress of the network; performing a trace to a destination through the network; and identifying one or more private routers belonging to the network based on the trace and the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
1 . A method comprising steps of:
determining an egress of a network;
determining a prefix associated with the egress of the network;
performing a trace to a destination through the network; and
identifying one or more private routers belonging to the network based on the trace and the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the network is a home network comprising one or more private routers.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the network is an enterprise network comprising one or more private routers.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the prefix is an Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) prefix.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the identifying further comprises:
analyzing each of a plurality of hops detected via the trace for determining an IPV6 prefix of an associated router of each of the plurality of hops; and
labeling each router as either belonging to the network or belonging to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on an IPV6 prefix of each of the routers.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein a router is labeled as belonging to the network based on its IPV6 prefix falling within the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the steps further comprise:
responsive to an event causing reduced network performance, determining the event as being associated with either the network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on the identifying.
8 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors to perform steps of:
determining an egress of a network;
determining a prefix associated with the egress of the network;
performing a trace to a destination through the network; and
identifying one or more private routers belonging to the network based on the trace and the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
9 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the network is a home network comprising one or more private routers.
10 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the network is an enterprise network comprising one or more private routers.
11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the prefix is an Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) prefix.
12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the identifying further comprises:
analyzing each of a plurality of hops detected via the trace for determining an IPV6 prefix of an associated router of each of the plurality of hops; and
labeling each router as either belonging to the private network or belonging to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on an IPV6 prefix of each of the routers.
13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein a router is labeled as belonging to the network based on its IPV6 prefix falling within the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the steps further comprise:
responsive to an event causing reduced network performance, determining the event as being associated with either the network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on the identifying.
15 . A server comprising:
one or more processors and memory comprising instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to;
determine an egress of a network;
determine a prefix associated with the egress of the network;
perform a trace to a destination through the network; and
identify one or more private routers belonging to the network based on the trace and the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
16 . The server of claim 11 , wherein the network is a home network comprising one or more private routers.
17 . The server of claim 11 , wherein the network is an enterprise network comprising one or more private routers.
18 . The server of claim 11 , wherein the prefix is an Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6) prefix.
19 . The server of claim 18 , wherein the identifying further comprises:
analyzing each of a plurality of hops detected via the trace for determining an IPV6 prefix of an associated router of each of the plurality of hops; and
labeling each router as either belonging to the network or belonging to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based on an IPV6 prefix of each of the routers.
20 . The server of claim 19 , wherein a router is labeled as belonging to the network based on its IPV6 prefix falling within the prefix associated with the egress of the network.
