Abstract

A wearable device includes a frame and a magnetic coupler opening formed in the frame. Wearable device further includes a processor, a memory accessible to the processor, and a very high frequency (VHF) radio transceiver for data transmission and reception and connected to the processor. Wearable device further includes a magnetic coupler connected to the VHF radio transceiver. Magnetic coupler includes a diamagnetic material shaped to form a VHF transmission or reception terminal that partially or fully aligns with the magnetic coupler opening. During transmission, magnetic coupler is configured to radiate transmitted VHF band radio modulated signals into tissue of the user. During reception, magnetic coupler is configured to absorb received VHF band radio modulated signals from the tissue of the user.

Claims (50)

1 . An eyewear device including:

a frame;

a temple coupled to the frame;

a magnetic coupler opening formed in the temple adjacent tissue of a user when wearing the eyewear device; and

a magnetic coupler including a diamagnetic material shaped to form a radio frequency (RF) terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening.

2 . The eyewear device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a very high frequency (VHF) radio transmitter coupled to the magnetic coupler, the VHF radio transmitter configured to modulate a VHF band radio carrier signal with data to generate VHF band radio modulated signals during transmission;

wherein, during transmission, the VHF radio transmitter radiates, via the magnetic coupler, the VHF band radio modulated signals into the tissue of the user.

3 . The eyewear device of claim 2 , wherein:

during transmission, the magnetic coupler radiates the VHF band radio modulated signals as circumferential magnetic fields.

4 . The eyewear device of claim 3 , wherein:

during transmission, the radiated circumferential magnetic fields induce longitudinal electric fields in the tissue of the user.

5 . The eyewear device of claim 2 , wherein:

the magnetic coupler includes a driven element; and

the driven element connects to the diamagnetic material.

6 . The eyewear device of claim 5 , further comprising:

a flexible printed circuit board (PCB);

wherein:

the VHF radio transmitter is disposed on the flexible PCB; and

the driven element of the magnetic coupler is electrically connected via one or more electrical interconnects, electrically conductive traces, or electrically conductive pads to the VHF radio transmitter.

7 . The eyewear device of claim 5 , wherein:

the diamagnetic material includes ferrite;

the driven element includes a conductive coil which wraps around the ferrite; and

the ferrite is shaped to form a half toroid.

8 . The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the diamagnetic material is shaped to form a fraction of a toroid, polyhedron, ellipsoid, or other quadric surface with a hollow interior cavity.

9 . The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the RF terminal extends through the magnetic coupler opening to contact the tissue of the user.

10 . The eyewear device of claim 1 , wherein the RF terminal is air gapped with the tissue of the user.

11 . A head-mounted eyewear device comprising:

means for mounting the head-mounted eyewear device on a head of a user, the means for mounting comprising a temple with a magnetic coupler opening formed in the temple adjacent tissue of a user when wearing the head-mounted eyewear device; and

means for radiating very high frequency (VHF) band radio modulated signals into tissue of the user, the means for radiating comprising a diamagnetic material shaped to form a radio frequency (RF) terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening.

12 . The head-mounted eyewear device of claim 11 , further comprising:

means for modulating a VHF band radio carrier signal with data to generate the VHF band radio modulated signals.

13 . The head-mounted eyewear device of claim 11 , further comprising:

means for absorbing received VHF band radio modulated signals from the tissue of the user via the RF terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening of the temple.

14 . A method for transmitting signals using a head-mounted eyewear device including a frame, a temple coupled to the frame, a magnetic coupler opening formed in the temple, and a magnetic coupler including a diamagnetic material shaped to form a radio frequency (RF) terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening, the method comprising:

generating very high frequency (VHF) band radio modulated signals; and

radiating the VHF band radio modulated signals into tissue of a user of the head-mounted eyewear device via the RF terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening of the temple.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

modulating a VHF band radio carrier signal with data to generate the VHF band radio modulated signals.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the radiating comprises:

radiating, via the magnetic coupler, the VHF band radio modulated signal as circumferential magnetic fields.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the radiating comprises:

inducing, via the magnetic coupler, longitudinal electric fields into the tissue of the user.

18 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

absorbing received VHF band radio modulated signals from the tissue of the user via the RF terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening of the temple.

19 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium including instructions for use with a head-mounted eyewear device including a frame, a temple coupled to the frame, a magnetic coupler opening formed in the temple, and a magnetic coupler including a diamagnetic material shaped to form a radio frequency (RF) terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening, the instruction, when performed by a processor, configure the head-mounted eyewear device to perform functions comprising:

generating very high frequency (VHF) band radio modulated signals; and

radiating the VHF band radio modulated signals into tissue of a user of the head-mounted eyewear device via the RF terminal adjacent the magnetic coupler opening of the temple.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , further comprising:

modulating a VHF band radio carrier signal with data to generate the VHF band radio modulated signals.
