Abstract

The clearance between the tips of the rotor blades and the segmented shroud of a gas turbine engine is controlled by a passive clearance control that includes a support ring made from a low thermal expansion material supporting a retainer for the blade outer air seal that is slidable relative thereto so that the segments expand circumferentially and move radially to match the rate of change slope of the rotor during expansion and contraction for all engine operations. A leaf spring between the support ring and outer air seal biases the outer air seal in the radial direction and maintains the desired radial position during steady state operation of the gas turbine engine.

Claims (12)

1. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine that includes a rotor and blades and a shroud surrounding the blades defining a gap between the tips of the blades and shroud, the improvement including a blade segment assembly including a blade outer air seal surrounding the tip of the blades made from a low thermal expansion material, the blade segment assembly includes a generally U-shaped fixed support ring having upstanding arms and an annular bottom portion extending there between, a retainer adjacent to said arms and mounted in sliding relationship thereto, an outer air seal supported to said retainer, a tie member extending between said retainer and said upstanding arms affixing said retainer to said U-shaped support ring, a slot formed in said retainer allowing said retainer and outer air seal to move in a radial direction as a function of the mechanical and thermal expansion and contraction when the gas turbine engine operates over its operating range.

2. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 1 wherein said retainer includes a widened portion and a hook extending from said outer air seal mounted in a groove formed in said widened portion of said retainer.

3. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 2 including a plurality of segmented outer air seals and each are mounted in circumferential spaced relationship and expand to abut against the adjacent segmented outer air seal so that said segmented outer air seal moves radially when said segmented outer air seal abuts the adjacent segmented outer air seal.

4. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 3 wherein said tie member includes a tie bolt having a head portion on one end and a locking means on the opposing end and a sleeve surrounding said bolt and extending between said retainers.

5. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 4 including resilient means disposed between said outer air seal and said annular bottom portion.

6. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 5 including ribs formed on the back face of said segmented outer air seals and means for leading cooling air adjacent to said ribs for cooling said outer air seal.

7. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 6 including axially spaced labyrinth seals formed at opposite edges of each of said segmented outer air seals.

8. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 6 wherein said support ring is made from Nilo K material.

9. A passive clearance control for a gas turbine engine as claimed in claim 5 wherein said resilient means is a leaf spring.

10. For a rotor that includes a plurality of blades, a shroud surrounding said blades defining a gap there between, said shroud including a plurality of segmented outer air seals having a face surrounding said blades, an outer air seal assembly for supporting said segmented outer air seals including a generally U-shaped support ring having a pair of upstanding arms, a pair of retainers mounted adjacent to the outer end of said pair of upstanding arms, said support ring made from a low thermal expansion material, a tie pin extending through diametrically disposed apertures formed in said upstanding arms and said pair of retainers and means for locking said tie pin in position, means for attaching said segmented outer air seal to said retainer and said retainer having a slot for allowing said outer air seal to move in a radial direction when said outer air seal assembly expands so as to maintain a constant gap between said shroud and said blades, a spring between the outer air seal and the support ring for supporting the outer air seal in the radial direction in the steady state condition of said rotor, whereby the rate of change of growth of the rotor matches the rate of change of growth of the outer air seal assembly.

11. For a rotor that includes a plurality of blades, a shroud surrounding said blades defining a gap there between as claimed in claim 10 including a sleeve surrounding said tie pin and passing through said slot and and tightly fitted in said aperture of said support ring.

12. For a rotor that includes a plurality of blades, a shroud surrounding said blades a defining a gap there between as claimed in claim 11 wherein said spring is a leaf spring.
