Abstract

In the toner cartridge recycling and remanufacturing industry, used xerographic products are reconditioned, repaired, and some are refilled with toner. Part of the refurbishment process is the replacing of used and worn components, including an electronic circuit, which has been spent. The electronic circuit is a critical component of the replaceable consumable unit and is used by the printer to store information used in the operation of the printer. Information stored in this electronic circuit relates to how much toner is remaining, the cartridge type, operating characteristics, and so forth. Some of these circuits have been designed for a one-time use application. For example, once the printer has determined that all of the usable toner has been consumed, the printer will essentially turn off the circuit in a replaceable consumable unit and the replaceable consumable unit will no longer function. In the remanufacturing process, a secondary electronic circuit can be attached to this non-functioning circuit in order to allow the replaceable consumable unit to operate once more. The nature of the present invention is directed at the process of repairing this non-functioning circuit and the resulting repaired unit.

Claims (18)

1. A method for repairing an electronic circuit for a remanufactured replaceable consumable unit comprising the steps of:

providing a replaceable consumable unit having an initially inoperable electronic circuit attached to said replaceable consumable unit, said replaceable consumable unit housed in a printing system,

providing a secondary electronic circuit in electrical communication with the initially inoperable electronic circuit,

intercepting electronic signals sent by the printing system to the replaceable consumable unit,

allowing said secondary electronic circuit to interoperate with said printing system so that the printing system will determine that the replaceable consumable unit will function with both the initially inoperable electronic circuit and the secondary electronic circuit.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is connected to the inoperable electronic circuit by wires.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is soldered to the inoperable electronic circuit.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is connected to the inoperable electronic circuit by adhesive.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is connected to the inoperable electronic circuit through a wireless circuit.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the inoperable electronic circuit employs a two-wire bus architecture for communicating with the printing system.

7. A remanufactured replaceable consumable unit comprising:

an initially inoperable electronic circuit,

a secondary electronic circuit, said secondary electronic circuit which communicates electrically with the initially inoperable electronic circuit, said secondary electronic circuit intercepting electronic signals sent by a printing system to the replaceable consumable unit, said secondary electronic circuit interoperating with said printing system and the initially inoperable electronic circuit so that the printing system will determine that the replaceable consumable unit will function with both the initially inoperable electronic circuit and the secondary electronic circuit communicating with the printing system.

8. The replaceable consumable unit of claim 7 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is connected to the inoperable electronic circuit by wires.

9. The replaceable consumable unit of claim 7 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is soldered to the inoperable electronic circuit.

10. The replaceable consumable unit of claim 7 wherein the secondary electronic circuit is connected to the inoperable electronic circuit by adhesive.

11. The replaceable consumable unit of claim 7 wherein the secondary electronic circuit communicates to the inoperable electronic circuit through a wireless circuit.

12. The replaceable consumable unit of claim 7 wherein the inoperable electronic circuit employs a two-wire bus architecture for communicating with the printing system.
