Biologically enhanced irrigants
Compositions, systems and methods utilizing engineered surgical irrigants providing delivery of components with therapeutic or other secondary benefits. Engineered irrigants provide targeted delivery of desired agents, including agents for propulsion of nano-devices, agents including molecular probes, gene expression agents, magnetically orientable agents, agents for discrete tissue temperature detection and tissue regeneration agents.
1. A method for determining the temperature of tissue structures under application of energy in an electrosurgery procedure, the method comprising
providing a surgical irrigant solution comprising at least one thermally responsive component;
applying the surgical irrigant solution to the surgical site; and
visually detecting at the tissue structures a discrete, pre-selected thermal change, a range of thermal change, or both in the at least one thermally responsive component upon application of energy in an electrosurgery procedure conducted within the surgical irrigant solution.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting a thermal change comprises detecting a color change in the at least one thermally responsive component.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting a thermal change comprises detecting a fluorescence change in the at least one thermally responsive component.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the surgical irrigant solution further comprises an isotonic and buffered solution.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting a thermal change comprises detecting a temperature above which cellular tissue death will result.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the thermal change temperature detected is about 65° C.
7. The method of claim 1 , where in the solution comprises a first thermally responsive component and a second thermally responsive component, wherein the first thermally responsive component detects a different thermal change than the second thermally responsive component.
8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first thermally responsive component detects a thermal change comprising detecting a temperature above which cellular tissue death will result, and the second thermally responsive component detects a thermal change comprising detecting a temperature lower than the temperature detected by the first thermally responsive component.
