Lightweight viewing casket with handles
A casket assembly includes a container and a two-piece lid. The two-piece lid includes a superior lid that covers the anterior end of the casket and an inferior lid that covers the opposite end. The container includes a bottom panel, an inferior end panel, a superior end panel, and two elongated side panels. Each elongated side portion has a recessed portion on the superior end of the casket for providing an improved viewing of the deceased. In one embodiment, the casket panels each include a plurality of mortise holes and/or tenons. The tenons on individual panels are designed to fit into the mortise holes on other panels. Pins are placed through pinholes on the tenons to retain the tenons in the mortise holes. A shelf and bracket assembly may be provided for use in displaying mementos of the deceased and/or for supporting the inferior casket lid.
1. A casket comprising:
a. a container designed and configured to receive the remains of a deceased, the container including at least one side panel including a first side adjoining an exterior space and a second side adjoining an interior space, the container further including at least one handle opening formed in the side panel and providing communication between the exterior space and the interior space, the handle opening including a top edge and a bottom edge;
b. at least one handle positioned in the handle opening, the at least one handle including
i. a top concave surface engaging the top edge of the handle opening, the top concave surface including a first upward extension on the exterior space and a second upward extension on the interior space;
ii. a bottom concave surface engaging the bottom edge of the handle opening, the bottom concave surface including a first downward extension on the exterior space and a second downward extension on the interior space; and
iii. a handle body connecting the second upward extension to the second downward extension.
2. The casket of claim 1 further comprising a barb positioned on the top concave surface of the handle.
3. The casket of claim 2 wherein the barb is positioned on the second upward extension of the top concave surface of the handle.
4. The casket of claim 1 wherein a bottom connector joins the first upward extension of the handle to the second upward extension of the handle.
5. The casket of claim 4 wherein the handle body defines a finger receptacle and provides a barrier between the finger receptacle and other portions of the interior space.
6. The casket of claim 5 wherein the second upward extension extends at least one inch above the bottom connector.
7. The casket of claim 5 wherein the finger receptacle is designed and dimensioned to receive four fingers of a human hand and thereby allow the palm of a human hand to contact the bottom connector.
8. The casket of claim 7 wherein the at least one handle comprises a plurality of handles.
9. The casket of claim 1 wherein the at least one handle opening comprises a plurality of handle openings.
10. The casket of claim 1 wherein the container is comprised of corrugated paper.
11. The casket of claim 1 wherein a relief elbow joins the second downward extension to the handle body.
12. The casket of claim 1 wherein the handle body is a single piece of extruded material.
