Abstract

A dielectric waveguide integrated plasma lamp is disclosed for powering a small and bright bulb with a diameter of a few millimeters. The lamp is contained within a high dielectric constant material which guides the microwaves to the bulb, provides heat isolation to the drive circuit, contains the microwaves, provides structural stability and ease of manufacturing and allows efficient energy coupling to the bulb when used as a dielectric resonant oscillator.

Claims (32)

1. A plasma lamp comprising:

a waveguide body having a dielectric constant greater than 2;

a feed to provide power to the waveguide body at at least one frequency that resonates within the waveguide body; and

a bulb positioned proximate a central axis of the waveguide body to receive the power from the waveguide body to emit light away from a first surface of a waveguide body,

wherein the bulb is positioned in a first plane orthogonal to the surface of the waveguide body,

the feed is inserted into a dielectric material of the waveguide body in a second plane orthogonal to the surface of the waveguide body, and

the first plane is parallel to, and offset from, the second plane.

2. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , further comprising a second feed coupled to the waveguide body.

3. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body resonates when the power is applied through the feed at a frequency in the range of 0.5GHz to 10GHz.

4. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the offset is about equal to an integer multiple of the lowest order half-wavelength of the power provided by the feed.

5. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the feed is in intimate contact with the waveguide body.

6. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body is formed from a solid ceramic material.

7. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body has a length substantially parallel to the central axis and a width transverse to the length, wherein the width of the waveguide body is greater than the length of the waveguide body.

8. The plasma lamp of claim 7 , wherein the length is substantially parallel to the central axis.

9. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body has an outer surface and a metallic coating is provided on the outer surface.

10. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body includes a first coated region provided with the conductive coating and at least one second region that is not coated with a conductive coating.

11. The plasma lamp of claim 10 , wherein the at least one second region is a region proximate the bulb.

12. The plasma lamp of claim 10 , comprising a probe connectable to a power source and configured to provide the power the waveguide body, wherein the at least one second region includes a region proximate the probe.

13. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body is configured to provide an electric field maxima substantially parallel to the central axis of the waveguide body.

14. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body is configured to provide an electric field maxima offset from the central axis of the waveguide body.

15. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , comprising a second feed in contact with the waveguide body.

16. The plasma lamp of claim 15 , wherein the second feed is configured to provide the energy to the dielectric waveguide body.

17. The plasma lamp of claim 15 , wherein the feed and the second feed are probes located symmetrically about the central axis.

18. The plasma lamp of claim 15 , wherein the second feed is configured to provide feedback from the waveguide body.

19. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body is a rectangular body.

20. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body is a right circular cylindrical body.

21. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the feed comprises a first probe positioned within the waveguide body and connectable to a power source configured to provide the power, the plasma lamp comprising:

a second probe positioned within the body, connectable to an input of the power source to provide feedback.

22. The lamp of claim 21 , wherein the power source includes an amplifier to receive the feedback from the second probe and provide power to the first probe.

23. The lamp of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide body forms an opening and at least a portion of the bulb is positioned in the opening.

24. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the offset is about equal to a half-wavelength of the power provided by the feed.

25. The plasma lamp of claim 1 , wherein the offset is about equal to a wavelength of the power provided by the feed.
