Abstract

An aspect of the present subject relates to an implantable medical system. An embodiment of the system includes a baroreflex stimulator, a myocardial infarction detector, and a controller. The baroreflex stimulator applies a baroreflex stimulation signal through an electrode. The myocardial infarction detector detects an event indicative of myocardial infarction. The controller is connected to the baroreflex stimulator and to the myocardial infarction detector, and is adapted to apply a baroreflex therapy in response to a detected event indicative of myocardial infarction. Other aspects are provided herein.

Claims (12)

1. A method, comprising:

automatically detecting a myocardial infarction event; and

in response to detecting a myocardial infarction event, decreasing coronary vascular resistance and increasing blood flow by applying a baroreflex therapy to stimulate sensory nerve endings sensitive to increased pressure in a blood vessel using an electrode positioned within the blood vessel, wherein the sensory nerve endings function as receptors of a baroreflex mechanism to reduce pressure.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying a baroreflex therapy includes applying a baroreflex therapy to stimulate sensory nerve endings sensitive to increased pressure in a pulmonary artery using an electrode positioned in the pulmonary artery.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising monitoring systemic blood pressure from within the pulmonary artery and modulating the baroreflex therapy based on the blood pressure.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring systemic blood pressure and modulating the baroreflex therapy based on the blood pressure.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a surrogate parameter of systemic blood pressure and modulating the baroreflex therapy based on the surrogate parameter.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the surrogate parameter includes a respiration parameter.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the myocardial infarction event includes an automatically-detected myocardial infarction.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the myocardial infarction event includes an automatically-detected precursor to a myocardial infarction.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a first baroreflex therapy before automatically detecting the myocardial infarction event, and in response to detecting a myocardial infarction event, decreasing coronary vascular resistance and increasing blood flow by applying an enhanced baroreflex therapy.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a first baroreflex therapy before automatically detecting the myocardial infarction event, and in response to detecting a myocardial infarction event, applying a second baroreflex therapy for the myocardial infarction event and tuning the second baroreflex therapy based on a comparison of an acquired parameter to a target parameter.
