Abstract

There is disclosed a method and controller for controlling an information flow including receiving a plurality of data packets and determining an offered load associated with the data packets. The method and controller also includes selectively discarding ones of the data packets as a function of the offered load to generate a transported load.

Claims (27)

1. A method of controlling an information flow, comprising:

receiving, by a controller, a plurality of data packets;

determining, by a controller, an offered load associated with the data packets;

selectively discarding, by a controller, ones of the data packets as a function of the offered load to generate a transported load, wherein the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets is a function of a probability associated with an instantaneous approximation of the offered load; and

triggering, by the controller, the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets, wherein once the offered load results in the transported load exceeding a defined upper threshold level, the offered load adjusts the generated transported load.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets is a function of an instantaneous approximation of the offered load.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets reduces the transported load.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets reduces the transported load below the upper threshold level.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the transported load is reduced responsive to an increase in the offered load in accordance with the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the transported load is greater than the offered load.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 further comprising defining a lower threshold level in accordance with the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets.

8. A controller for controlling an information flow, comprising:

means for determining an offered load associated with a plurality of data packets;

means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets as a function of the offered load to generate a transported load, wherein the means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets is a function of a probability associated with an instantaneous approximation of the offered load; and

means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets being configured to selectively discard ones of the data packets responsive to the transported load exceeding an upper threshold level, wherein once the offered load results in the transported load exceeding the upper threshold level, the offered load adjusts to the generated transported load.

9. The controller as recited in claim 8 wherein the means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets reduces the transported load below the upper threshold level.

10. The controller as recited in claim 8 wherein the means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets maintains the transported load above a lower threshold level.

11. The controller as recited in claim 8 wherein the means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets maintains the transported load above the offered load.

12. The controller as recited in claim 8 wherein the transported load is reduced responsive to an increase in the offered load in accordance with the means for selectively discarding ones of the data packets.

13. A controller for controlling an information flow, comprising:

a policer/shaper configured to:

determine an offered load associated with a plurality of data packets;

selectively discard ones of the data packets as a function of the offered load to generate a transported load, wherein the act of selectively discarding ones of the data packets is a function of a probability associated with an instantaneous approximation of the offered load; and

selectively discard ones of the data packets responsive to the transported load exceeding an upper threshold level, wherein once the offered load results in the transported load exceeding the upper threshold level, the offered load adjusts to the generated transported load.

14. The controller as recited in claim 13 wherein the policer/shaper is configured to selectively discard ones of the data packets to reduce the transported load below the upper threshold level.

15. The controller as recited in claim 13 wherein the policer/shaper is configured to selectively discard ones of the data packets to maintain the transported load above the offered load.

16. The controller as recited in claim 13 wherein the transported load is reduced responsive to an increase in the offered load.
