Evaporative emissions filter
An evaporative emissions filter for an engine air induction system. The evaporative emissions filter includes a hydrocarbon vapor-adsorbent member disposed within the air induction system outside the direct air flow path. A mechanism is provided for mounting the evaporative emissions filter within the air induction system. Hydrocarbon vapors present in the air induction system after engine shut-down are substantially retained in the adsorbent member until air flows through the air induction system after the engine starts.
1. A method of making an adsorptive member for adsorbing a desired gaseous adsorbate, the method comprising:
thermoforming a first polymeric material to form at least one well therein;
fastening a second polymeric material to the first polymeric material, thereby forming at least one partially enclosed chamber from the at least one well;
filling the at least one chamber with a predetermined amount of adsorptive media one of before or after fastening the second polymeric material to the first polymeric material, wherein the at least one chamber has the adsorptive media therein; and
forming a plurality of throughbores in the member, the throughbores extending from an outer surface of the first material to an outer surface of the second material, the throughbores adapted to receive attachment members for mounting the member to a desired surface;
wherein each of the first and second polymeric materials includes pores that are permeable to the desired adsorbate, and wherein each of the first and second polymeric materials pores are substantially impermeable to the adsorptive media.
2. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising inserting a respective plurality of attachment members into the throughbores, wherein the attachment members are configured to mount the adsorptive member a spaced distance from the desired surface.
3. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising die cutting the adsorptive member to a shape substantially conforming to the desired surface.
4. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising selectively articulating at a living hinge at least one portion of the member so as to substantially conform the member to the desired surface.
5. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising cutting the first polymeric material and the second polymeric material into a predetermined shape prior to positioning such materials.
6. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the adsorptive media has an exposed surface area ranging between about 30 square inches and about 200 square inches.
7. An adsorptive filter formed by the process of claim 1 .
8. A method for making a hydrocarbon adsorber, comprising:
disposing a first permeable layer over a die;
thermoforming the first permeable layer in a configuration having a plurality of receiving areas;
welding a portion of a flat second permeable layer to the first permeable layer, wherein the plurality of receiving areas are disposed therebetween and the plurality of areas are accessible from a periphery of the first permeable layer;
filing the plurality of receiving areas with a hydrocarbon adsorbing material; and
sealing the periphery of the first permeable layer after the hydrocarbon material has been disposed in the plurality of receiving areas.
