Playing digital content from satellite radio media based on taste profiles
A portable content-playing device which automatically constructs a virtual channel of content consistent with the tastes of the user of the device, where the content originates from one or more satellites. The portable device contains software for computing similarity values between a local taste profile (representative of the tastes of the user of the device) and taste profiles downloaded from one or more of the satellites, and this information is used in choosing the content of the virtual channel.
1. A portable content-playing device for playing digital content communicated along with related data from at least one satellite, comprising
radio communication hardware for receiving data from said at least one satellite,
a central processing unit and supporting hardware including random access memory and persistent storage,
said persistent storage storing data including locally-stored digital content and taste profile data and software programs,
said taste profile data including a local taste profile representing the tastes associated with said locally-stored digital content as represented by at least one selected from the group consisting of active indicators of taste and passive indicators of taste,
said software programs including a software program for downloading other taste profiles from said at least one satellite,
said software programs including a software program for computing similarity values between said local taste profile and downloaded other taste profiles,
said software programs including a software program for deciding which digital content to play based upon said similarity values,
whereby a virtual channel is constructed automatically by inference from said local taste profile and downloaded other taste profiles for the benefit of that user to enable that user to have the experience of a digital content channel specifically geared towards that user's individual tastes.
2. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 wherein said digital content comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of audio content and video content.
3. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 further comprising means for acting as a one-way node or two-way node at different times.
4. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 wherein said other taste profiles represent the tastes of other human users as represented by local taste profiles on portable content-playing devices associated with those users.
5. The portable content-playing device of claim 4 wherein said local taste profiles are user taste profiles additionally including at least one digital content identifier.
6. The portable content playing device of claim 5 , wherein:
said software program for deciding which digital content to play includes means for identifying the most similar of said other taste profiles to said local taste profile,
said software program for deciding which digital content to play making that decision based upon said at least one digital content identifier associated with said most similar of said other taste profiles.
7. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 wherein said other taste profiles are digital content taste profiles.
8. The portable content-playing device of claim 7 wherein the digital content items associated with the ones of said digital content taste profiles that are found by said software program for computing similarity values to be most similar to said local taste profiles are played in said virtual channel.
9. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 wherein said device includes a passive indicator of taste comprising a save button enabling the user to indicate that the user wishes to save the digital content item being played at the time the button is pressed so that it may played again later.
10. The portable content-playing device of claim 9 wherein said digital content consists of at least one selected from the group consisting of audio content and video content.
11. The portable content-playing device of claim 9 further comprising means for acting as a one-way node or two-way node at different times.
12. The portable content-playing device of claim 9 wherein said other taste profiles represent the tastes of other human users as represented by the local taste profiles on portable content-playing devices associated with those users.
13. The portable content-playing device of claim 12 wherein said local taste profiles are user taste profiles additionally including at least one digital content identifier.
14. The portable content playing device of claim 13 , wherein:
said software program for deciding which digital content to play includes means for identifying the most similar of said other taste profiles to said local taste profile,
said software program for deciding which digital content to play making that decision based upon said at least one digital content identifier associated with said most similar of said other taste profiles.
15. The portable content-playing device of claim 9 wherein said other taste profiles are digital content taste profiles.
16. The portable content-playing device of claim 15 wherein the digital content items associated with the ones of said digital content taste profiles that are found by said software program for computing similarity values to be most similar to said local taste profiles are played in said virtual channel.
17. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 , wherein it is adapted to act as a one-way node.
18. The portable content-playing device of claim 1 , wherein it is adapted to act as a two-way node.
19. An entertainment system comprising
at least one satellite for communicating digital content and related data and a plurality of portable content-playing devices comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of one-way nodes and two-way nodes,
said portable content-playing devices including radio communication hardware for receiving data from said at least one satellite,
said portable content-playing devices additionally including a central processing unit and supporting hardware such as random access memory and persistent storage,
said persistent storage storing data including locally-stored digital content and taste profile data and software programs,
said taste profile data including a local taste profile representing the tastes associated with said locally-stored digital content as represented by at least one selected from the group consisting of active indicators of taste and passive indicators of taste,
said software programs including a software program for downloading other taste profiles from said at least one satellite,
said software programs including a software program for computing similarity values between said local taste profile and downloaded taste profiles,
said software programs including a software program for deciding which digital content to play based upon said similarity values,
whereby a virtual channel is constructed automatically by inference from said local taste profile and downloaded other taste profiles for the benefit of that user to enable that user to have the experience of a digital content channel specifically geared towards that user's individual tastes.
