Abstract

An impedance tuner may include a transmission media for propagating RF signals, a reflection magnitude control device mounted in a fixed position relative to a direction of signal propagation along said transmission media, and a phase shifter to control a reflection phase. A multi-section probe for an impedance tuner system may include a plurality of probe sections and a holder structure for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe sections.

Claims (64)

1. A multi-section probe for an impedance tuner system including a transmission media with a ground plane structure, the probe comprising:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field paths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure; and

wherein the holder structure portion connects the plurality of probe section portions together in a spaced relation relative to the direction of signal propagation.

The probe of claim 1 , wherein said probe section portions have approximately same cross section and are movable together in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation so that for any given position, said probe section portions are all approximately at the same distance from an axis of the transmission media.

3. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the holder structure portion is an electrically conductive structure.

4. A load pull measurement system, comprising the probe of claim 1 .

5. The probe of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of probe section portions comprises an even number of spaced probe mismatch sections, and adjacent sections are separated by a gap.

6. The probe of claim 5 , wherein lengths of the probe mismatch sections and the respective gaps are selected to provide a desired mismatch response as a function of frequency.

7. The probe of claim 5 , wherein said even number is two, and each section and said gap are of substantially equal electrical length along the direction of signal propagation.

8. The probe of claim 5 , wherein said even number is four, and wherein a first section and a second section have substantially equal electrical first lengths, and a first gap separating said first and second sections is of said first length, and wherein the third section, a fourth section and second and third gaps have substantially equal electrical second lengths, said second length is one half said first length.

9. A multi-section probe for an impedance tuner system including a transmission media with a ground plane structure, the probe comprising:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field paths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure, wherein the holder structure portion is a dielectric structure.

10. A multi-section probe for an impedance tuner system including a transmission media with a ground plane structure, the probe comprising:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field paths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure, wherein the holder structure portion is an electrically conductive structure, and wherein the holder structure portion and the probe section portions are fabricated as a unitary structure.

11. An impedance tuner system, comprising:

a transmission media for propagating RF signals;

a probe system mounted in a fixed or movable position relative to a direction of signal propagation along said transmission media; and

wherein the probe system includes:

a plurality of conductive probe sections; and

a dielectric structure mechanically supporting the plurality of probe sections; and

a mechanism to move the plurality of probe sections and the dielectric structure in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation.

12. The tuner system of claim 11 , in which the transmission media is a slabline.

13. The tuner system of claim 11 , wherein said plurality of probe sections comprises at least three probe sections.

The tuner system of claim 11 , wherein said probe sections have approximately same cross section and are movable together in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation so that for any given position, said probe sections are all approximately at the same distance from an axis of the transmission media.

15. The tuner system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of probe sections and the dielectric structure are in a fixed position relative to the direction of signal propagation.

16. The tuner system of claim 11 , wherein said plurality of probe sections comprises an even number of spaced probe mismatch sections, and adjacent sections are separated by a gap.

17. The tuner system of claim 16 , wherein said even number is two, and each section and said gap are of substantially equal electrical length along the direction of signal propagation.

18. The tuner system of claim 16 , wherein said even number is four, and wherein a first section and a second section have substantially equal electrical first lengths, and a first gap separating said first and second sections is of said first length, and wherein the third section, a fourth section and second and third gaps have substantially equal electrical second lengths, said second length is one half said first length.

19. The tuner system of claim 16 , wherein lengths of the probe mismatch sections and the respective gaps are selected to provide a desired mismatch response as a function of frequency.

20. An impedance tuner system, comprising:

a transmission media for propagating RF signals;

a probe system mounted in a fixed or movable position relative to a direction of signal propagation along said transmission media; and

wherein the probe system includes:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field paths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure, and wherein the holder structure portion connects the plurality of probe section portions together in a spaced relation relative to the direction of signal propagation; and

a mechanism to move the plurality of probe sections and the holder structure portion in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation.

21. The tuner system of claim 20 , in which the transmission media is a slabline.

22. The tuner system of claim 20 , wherein said plurality of probe sections comprises at least three probe sections.

The tuner system of claim 20 , wherein said probe sections have approximately same cross section and are movable together in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation so that for any given position, said probe sections are all approximately at the same distance from an axis of the transmission media.

24. The tuner system of claim 20 , wherein the plurality of probe sections and the holder structure are in a fixed position relative to the direction of signal propagation.

25. The tuner system of claim 20 , wherein the holder structure portion is an electrically conductive structure.

26. The tuner system of claim 20 , wherein said plurality of probe sections comprises an even number of spaced probe mismatch sections, and adjacent sections are separated by a gap.

27. The tuner system of claim 26 , wherein said even number is two, and each section and said gap are of substantially equal electrical length along the direction of signal propagation.

28. The tuner system of claim 26 , wherein said even number is four, and wherein a first section and a second section have substantially equal electrical first lengths, and a first gap separating said first and second sections is of said first length, and wherein the third section, a fourth section and second and third gaps have substantially equal electrical second lengths, said second length is one half said first length.

29. The tuner system of claim 26 , wherein lengths of the probe mismatch sections and the respective gaps are selected to provide a desired mismatch response as a function of frequency.

30. An impedance tuner system, comprising:

a transmission media for propagating RF signals;

a probe system mounted in a fixed or movable position relative to a direction of signal propagation along said transmission media; and

wherein the probe system includes:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field paths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure; and

a mechanism to move the plurality of probe section portions and the holder structure portion in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation; and

wherein the holder structure portion is a dielectric structure.

31. An impedance tuner system, comprising:

a transmission media for propagating RF signals;

a probe system mounted in a fixed or movable position relative to a direction of signal propagation along said transmission media; and

wherein the probe system includes:

a plurality of probe section portions; and

a holder structure portion for mechanically supporting the plurality of probe section portions, and wherein the holder structure portion has a thickness dimension transverse to a direction of signal propagation along the transmission media which is less than a corresponding thickness of the plurality of probe section portions, so that electromagnetic field oaths to ground at the plurality of probe section portions are primarily from the plurality of the probe section portions to the ground plane structure, and wherein the holder structure portion is an electrically conductive structure; and

a mechanism to move the plurality of probe section portions and the holder structure portion in a direction transverse to the direction of signal propagation; and

wherein the holder structure portion and the probe section portions are fabricated as a unitary structure.
