Abstract

An access portal is provided including a housing, a body defining a fluid reservoir, and a septum enclosing the fluid reservoir. A stem in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir extends from the fluid reservoir. The access portal also includes a reservoir insert disposed within the fluid reservoir, in which the reservoir insert decreases the fluid fill volume of the reservoir.

Claims (17)

1. An access portal comprising: a body defining a fluid reservoir; a septum enclosing at least a portion of said fluid reservoir; and a reservoir insert disposed within said fluid reservoir, said reservoir insert comprising a plurality of conical members coupled to one another and forming a ring member, said reservoir insert reduces a fluid fill volume of said reservoir by about 40%, wherein said ring shaped reservoir insert generally defines a central region, said central region extending unobstructed from a base of said fluid reservoir to said septum.

2. An access portal according to claim 1 , further comprising a stem in fluid communication with said fluid reservoir via an outlet passage.

3. An access portal according to claim 1 , further comprising a housing at least partially surrounding said body.

4. An access portal according to claim 1 , wherein said reservoir insert comprises a unitary body.

5. An access portal according to claim 1 , wherein said reservoir insert is moveable within said fluid reservoir.

6. An access portal according to claim 1 , wherein said ring member has a circular geometry.

7. An access portal comprising: a body defining a fluid reservoir; a septum enclosing at least a portion of said fluid reservoir; and a reservoir insert disposed within said fluid reservoir, said reservoir insert comprising a plurality of spherical members coupled to one another and forming a ring member, said reservoir insert reduces a fluid fill volume of said reservoir by about 40%, wherein said ring shaped reservoir insert generally defines a central region, said central region extending unobstructed from a base of said fluid reservoir insert to said septum.

8. An access portal according to claim 7 , further comprising a stem in fluid communication with said fluid reservoir via an outlet passage.

9. An access portal according to claim 7 , wherein said reservoir insert is moveable within said fluid reservoir.

10. An access portal according to claim 7 , wherein said reservoir insert comprises a unitary body.

11. An access portal comprising: a body defining a fluid reservoir; a septum enclosing at least a portion of said fluid reservoir; and a reservoir insert disposed within said reservoir, said reservoir insert comprising a ring member having one or more protuberances formed thereon, said one or more protuberances being capable of, at least in part, being deflected by a needle to cause said reservoir insert to move out of the path of the needle, wherein said reservoir insert reduces a fluid fill volume of said reservoir by about 40%, wherein said ring shaped reservoir insert generally defines a central region, said central region extending unobstructed from a base of said fluid reservoir to said septum.

12. An access portal according to claim 11 , further comprising a stem in fluid communication with said fluid reservoir via an outlet passage.

13. An access portal according to claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of one of said protuberances has a conical shape.

14. An access portal according to claim 11 , wherein at least a portion of one of said protuberances has a spherical shape.

15. An access portal according to claim 11 , wherein said reservoir insert comprises a unitary member.

16. An access portal according to claim 11 , further comprising a housing at least partially surrounding said body.

17. An access portal according to claim 16 , wherein said septum is disposed at least partially between said body and said housing.
