Abstract

A modular wheelchair assembly is adapted to be reconfigured between a fixed angle of tilt, a dynamically adjustable tilt-in-space configuration with the tilt axis being near the user's knees and a dynamically adjustable tilt-in-space configuration with the tilt axis being near the user's center of gravity. The reconfiguration is achieved by modifying a limited number of selectively removable components of the support assembly or the pivot assembly of the wheelchair.

Claims (45)

1. A wheelchair having:

a seat frame assembly comprising opposed seat rails and at least one seat crossbar assembly extending between said seat rails;

a base frame assembly comprising opposed base rails and at least one base crossbar assembly extending between said base rails;

a forward portion of said seat frame assembly and a forward portion of said base frame assembly being adapted to receive opposed removable pivot assemblies extending between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly for pivoting of said seat frame assembly in relation to said base frame assembly about a point defined by said pivot assemblies; and,

said seat crossbar assembly and said base crossbar assembly being adapted to removably receive a support assembly extending between them; and

wherein each of said pivot assemblies comprise

a first pivot element removably attached to said forward portion of said seat frame assembly;

a second pivot element removably attached to said forward portion of said base frame assembly;

wherein said first and second removable pivot elements, when installed, cooperate to define a pivot point between them, said first and second pivot elements being operatively secured to one another; and,

said support assembly being a removable support assembly connected between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly, said removable support assembly being configurable to define any one of a plurality of predetermined relative fixed pivot angles between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly.

2. The wheelchair of claim 1 , wherein:

said first pivot element is removably attached to a forward portion of each of said seat rails;

said second pivot element is removably attached to a forward portion of each of said base rails; and,

said removable support assembly is connected to said seat crossbar assembly and to said base crossbar assembly.

3. The wheelchair of claim 2 wherein:

said first pivot element comprises a mounting member interposed between said seat rail and said seat crossbar assembly and is attached to said seat rail by at least one removable fastener extending through said seat rail and said mounting member;

said second pivot element is interposed between said base rail and said base crossbar assembly and is attached to said base rail by at least one removable fastener extending through said base rail and said second pivot element; and,

said base rails include a plurality of spaced apertures along a longitudinal recess provided in the rearward portion of each of said base rails.

4. The wheelchair of claim 2 wherein said removable support assembly comprises:

a bracket removably attached to said seat frame assembly;

an interface element removably attached to said base frame assembly;

said interface element comprising a plurality of attachment points arranged in an arc and said bracket being selectively attached to said interface element at one of said attachment points.

5. A wheelchair having:

a seat frame assembly comprising opposed seat rails and at least one seat crossbar assembly extending between said seat rails;

a base frame assembly comprising opposed base rails and at least one base crossbar assembly extending between said base rails;

a forward portion of said seat frame assembly and a forward portion of said base frame assembly being adapted to receive opposed removable pivot assemblies extending between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly for pivoting of said seat frame assembly in relation to said base frame assembly about a point defined by said pivot assemblies; and,

said seat crossbar assembly and said base crossbar assembly being adapted to removably receive a support assembly extending between them; and

wherein each of said pivot assemblies comprise:

a first pivot element removably attached to a forward portion of each of said seat rails;

a second pivot element removably attached to a forward portion of each of said base rails;

said first and second removable pivot elements, when installed, cooperating to define a pivot point between them, said first and second pivot elements being operatively secured to one another; and,

said support assembly being a removable support assembly connected between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly, said removable support assembly comprising bias means between said seat frame assembly and said base frame assembly for providing a supporting force during tilting of said seat frame assembly.

6. The wheelchair of claim 5 wherein said bias means comprises an extendible element, one end of which is pivotally secured to a bell crank, and said bell crank is retained in operative relationship to said base frame assembly.

7. The wheelchair of claim 5 wherein:

said first pivot element comprises a mounting member interposed between said seat rail and said seat crossbar assembly and is attached to said seat rail by at least one removable fastener extending through said seat rail and said mounting member;

said second pivot element is interposed between said base rail and said base crossbar assembly and is attached to said base rail by at least one removable fastener extending through said base rail and said second pivot element; and,

said base rails include a plurality of spaced apertures along a longitudinal recess provided in a rearward portion of each of said base rails.

8. A dynamically tiltable wheelchair comprising:

a seat frame assembly having opposed seat rails;

a base frame assembly having opposed base rails;

a hanger member removably secured to a rearward portion of each of said seat rails, said hanger member extending upwardly from said seat rails;

a pivot support arm removably secured to a rearward portion of each of said base rails, said pivot support arm extending upwards above said seat frame assembly and supporting said hanger member about a pivot point located on said pivot support arm above said seat frame assembly for pivoting said seat frame assembly in relation to said base frame assembly; and

each pivot support arm and each hanger member cooperating to locate said pivot point to be substantially coincident with the center of gravity of a wheelchair occupant.

9. The wheelchair of claim 8 further comprising a removable lock assembly for locking the seat frame assembly against pivoting in relation to the base frame assembly, a pivot element removably mounted on said base frame assembly, and wherein said lock assembly is pivotally attached to said pivot element at one end.

10. The wheelchair of claim 8 further comprising a plurality of mounting apertures along the rearward portion of each of said seat rails for receiving fasteners to removably secure said hanger element to said seat rail in any one of a plurality of fore and aft positions.
