Abstract

A system and method is described that enables a health care provider to monitor and manage a health condition of a patient. The system includes a health care provider apparatus operated by a health care provider and a remotely programmable patient apparatus that is operated by a patient. The health care provider develops a script program using the health care provider apparatus and then sends the script program to a remotely programmable patient apparatus through a communication network such as the World Wide Web. The script program is a computer-executable patient protocol that provides information to the patient about the patient's health condition and that interactively monitors the patient health condition by asking the patient questions and by receiving answers to those questions. The answers to these health related questions are then forwarded as patient data from the remotely programmable patient apparatus to the health care provider apparatus through the communication network. The patient data may also include information supplied by a physiological monitoring device such as a blood glucose monitor that is connected to the remotely programmable patient apparatus. When the patient data arrives at the health care provider apparatus, the patient data is processed for further management of the patient's health condition by the health care provider, such as forwarding another script program to the remotely programmable patient apparatus.

Claims (39)

1. A blood glucose monitoring system, comprising:

a blood glucose monitoring device for producing digitally encoded health signals representative of a blood glucose level of a user; and

a programmable microprocessor-based portable unit, separate from said blood glucose monitoring device, comprising:

a user interface including (i) a display for displaying information, (ii) a plurality of switches operable for interactively controlling said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit and for manipulating said information displayed on said display and (iii) a circuit coupled to said plurality of switches for generating signals in response to operation of said switches; and

digital data storage media tangibly embodying therein (i) program instructions that are executable for (a) signal processing in response to signals based upon said digitally encoded health signals, (b) signal processing of insulin dosage data received from said user and (c) detecting a need for a change in an insulin dosage of said user and (ii) storage of (a) time and date tagged glucose test results, (b) calibration information and (c) identification data of said user; and

a signal processor for performing said signal processing by executing said program instructions, wherein said program instructions are customized to said identification data of said user.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether a sufficient amount of blood has been applied to a reagent impregnated portion of a test strip.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether said test strip is properly inserted into the blood glucose monitoring device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit is a palm-top computer.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood glucose monitoring device is configured for receiving a test strip, said test strip including a reagent portion configured for having blood applied thereto.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein said program instructions when executed use said calibration information to perform a calibration procedure that involves reading a code strip inserted into the blood glucose monitoring device.

7. A blood glucose monitoring system, comprising:

a blood glucose monitoring device for producing digitally encoded health signals representative of a blood glucose level of a user; and

a programmable microprocessor-based portable unit, separate from said blood glucose monitoring device, comprising:

a user interface including (i) a display for displaying information, (ii) a plurality of switches operable for interactively controlling said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit and for manipulating said information displayed on said display and (iii) a circuit coupled to said plurality of switches for generating signals in response to operation of said switches; and

digital data storage media tangibly embodying therein (i) program instructions that are executable for (a) signal processing in response to signals based upon said digitally encoded health signals, (b) signal processing of insulin dosage data received from said user, (c) detecting a need for a change in an insulin dosage of said user and (d) monitoring food intake of said user and (ii) storage of identification data of said user; and

a signal processor for performing said signal processing by executing said program instructions, wherein said program instructions are customized to said identification data of said user.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether a sufficient amount of blood has been applied to a reagent portion of a test strip.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether said test strip is properly inserted into the blood glucose monitoring device.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit is a palm-top computer.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the blood glucose monitoring device is configured for receiving a test strip, said test strip including a reagent impregnated portion configured for having blood applied thereto.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein said food intake is monitored quantitatively in terms of “Bread Exchange” units or other suitable terms.

13. The system of claim 7 , wherein said food intake is monitored by (i) providing a food intake menu to said user and (ii) providing for a selection of one or more food items from said food intake menu using switches of said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit.

14. The system of claim 7 , wherein said food intake data is stored along with time and date tagged blood glucose test results.

15. The system of claim 7 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor exercise of said user.

16. A blood glucose monitoring system, comprising:

a blood glucose monitoring device for producing digitally encoded health signals representative of said blood glucose level of a user; and

a programmable microprocessor-based portable unit, separate from said blood glucose monitoring device, comprising:

a user interface including (i) a display for displaying information, (ii) a plurality of switches operable for interactively controlling said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit and for manipulating said information displayed on said display and (iii) a circuit coupled to said plurality of switches for generating signals in response to operation of said switches; and

digital data storage media tangibly embodying therein (i) program instructions that are executable for (a) signal processing in response to signals based upon said digitally encoded health signals, (b) signal processing of insulin dosage data received from said user, (c) detecting a need for a change in an insulin dosage of said user and (d) indicating trend information of said user and (ii) storage of identification data of said user; and

a signal processor for performing said signal processing by executing said program instructions, wherein said program instructions are customized to said identification data of said user.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether a sufficient amount of blood has been applied to a reagent portion of a test strip.

18. The system of claim 17 , the program instructions when executed monitor whether said test strip is properly inserted into the blood glucose monitoring device.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit is a palm-top computer.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the blood glucose monitoring device is configured for receiving a test strip, said test strip including a reagent portion configured for having blood applied thereto.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the program instructions when executed monitor whether said test strip is properly inserted into the blood glucose monitoring device.

22. The system of claim 16 , wherein said trend information is displayed in graphic format.

23. The system of claim 16 , wherein said trend information is displayed in alphanumeric format.

24. The system of claim 16 , wherein said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit is configured for displaying daily or weekly trend information of said user, or both.
