Abstract

Compositions of purified and biologically active ellagitannins are provided by separation from pomegranate husk using a method of extraction and purification using a solid polymeric adsorbent and the uses of the said compounds.

Claims (13)

1. A composition comprising a punicalagin-enriched extract, said extract including at least about 5% by weight punicalagin derived from pomegranate material, pomegranate husk, whole pomegranate, pomegranate arils, pomegranate pulp, or any combination thereof based on a total weight of said composition.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the punicalagin-enriched extract comprises a total pomegranate tannins (TPT) extract.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the punicalagin-enriched extract is derived from pomegranate husk, pomegranate aril, or a combination thereof.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the punicalagin-enriched extract further comprises a hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin selected from the group consisting of ellagic acid, punicalagin, gallagic acid, ellagic acid glycosides, and any combination thereof.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said punicalagin comprises a greater percentage by weight of hydrolyzable pomegranate tannins present in said punicalagin-enriched extract based on a total weight of the composition than any other hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin present in said punicalagin-enriched extract.

6. The composition of claim 5 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 5% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

7. The composition of claim 6 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 10% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 30% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

9. The composition of claim 8 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 50% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

10. The composition of claim 9 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 70% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

11. The composition of claim 10 , wherein said hydrolyzable pomegranate tannin concentration is at least about 90% by weight based on a total weight of the composition.

12. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the composition comprises a nutraceutical formulation for ingestion by a human being or a by non-human animal.

13. The composition of claim 5 , wherein the nutraceutical formulation promotes cardiovascular health.
