Abstract

Measurements are taken of moisture, BTU/lb (British Thermal Units per pound), ash, forms of sulfur, volatile material, grindability, and absorption properties of any of a wide variety of mine-run solid fuels. Using that information, a dry electromagnetic process technology has been developed that can be controlled and monitored to selectively alter and enhance solid fuel properties for the application in question. Specific changes include altering the mechanical structure and chemical composition of solid fuels such as coal, coal coke or petroleum coke, increasing the BTU/lb to optimum levels, decreasing all forms of sulfur, and decreasing ash, while maintaining the BTU/lb of the fuels. A new family of solid fuel designer coals not found in nature can be produced via these methods and apparatus.

Claims (16)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a raw solid fuel;

receiving a desired end condition of the raw solid fuel;

determining a duration and a power level of a microwave emission for each of a series of microwave generators based on the desired end condition; and

sequentially irradiating the raw solid fuel with the microwave emissions from the series of microwave generators at the determined power levels for the determined durations, thereby processing the raw solid fuel to the desired end condition,

wherein said determining of the duration and the power level of the microwave emission for each of a series of microwave generators is changed based on a measurement of one or more properties of the raw solid fuel during said processing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the raw solid fuel includes coal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the raw solid fuel is in a chamber during irradiation, the method further comprising flowing an inert gas through the chamber during irradiation.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the inert gas is nitrogen.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the inert gas is argon.

6. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

during irradiation, identifying a temperature of the raw solid fuel; and

based on the identified temperature, causing a change in at least one of the power levels, the durations, a dwell time of the raw solid fuel in the chamber, and the flow of the inert gas through the chamber, so that the temperature remains below an ignition-threshold temperature.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the desired end condition includes a desired moisture content.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the desired end condition further includes a desired ash content.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the desired end condition includes at least one of a desired moisture content and a desired ash content.
