Abstract

Methods for screening for neurological disorders are disclosed. Specifically, methods are disclosed for screening for neurological disorders in a subject by analyzing a tissue sample obtained from the subject for the presence of elevated levels of neurotoxic amino acids or neurotoxic derivatives thereof associated with neurological disorders. In particular, methods are disclosed for diagnosing a neurological disorder in a subject, or predicting the likelihood of developing a neurological disorder in a subject, by determining the levels of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) in a tissue sample obtained from the subject. Methods for screening for environmental factors associated with neurological disorders are disclosed. Methods for inhibiting, treating or preventing neurological disorders are disclosed.

Claims (12)

1. A method for screening an environmental sample to determine if the environmental sample is associated with exposure of a subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder, comprising, obtaining a tissue sample from the subject and analyzing the sample to determine the amount of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), and obtaining an environmental sample from material actually ingested by the subject, wherein the environmental sample is a water sample, and analyzing the environmental sample to determine the presence of BMAA and detecting cyanobacteria producing BMAA in the environmental sample, wherein the presence of BMAA in the environmental sample indicates actual exposure of the subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cyanobacteria are from the genus Nostoc.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cyanobacteria are from the genus Anabena.

A method for screening an environmental sample to determine if the environmental sample is associated with exposure of a subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder, comprising, obtaining a tissue sample from the subject and analyzing the sample to determine the amount of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), wherein the tissue sample is neurological tissue associated with the peripheral nervous system (PNS), and obtaining an environmental sample from material actually ingested by the subject, wherein the environmental sample is a water sample, and analyzing the environmental sample to determine the presence of BMAA, wherein the presence of BMAA in the environmental sample indicates actual exposure of the subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder.

A method for screening an environmental sample to determine if the environmental sample is associated with exposure of a subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder, comprising, obtaining a tissue sample from the subject and analyzing the sample to determine the amount of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA), wherein the tissue is non-neurological tissue, and obtaining an environmental sample from material actually ingested by the subject, wherein the environmental sample is a water sample, and analyzing the environmental sample to determine the presence of BMAA, wherein the presence of BMAA in the environmental sample indicates actual exposure of the subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the tissue is keratinous tissue.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the tissue is hair.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the tissue is skin.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the tissue is nail.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the tissue is non-keratinous tissue.

11. A method for screening an environmental sample to determine if the environmental sample is associated with exposure of a subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder, comprising determining the presence of cyanobacteria that produce BMAA in an environmental sample from material ingested by the subject and determining the presence of BMAA in the sample.

A method for screening an environmental sample to determine if the environmental sample is associated with exposure of a subject to a neurotoxic amino acid associated with at least one neurological disorder, comprising determining the presence of cyanobacteria that produce BMAA in an environmental sample from material ingested by the subject and determining the presence of BMAA in a tissue sample from the subject.
