Abstract

A plunger that operates by a piston to drive a purging flow at relatively high pressure is disclosed. The plunger includes features so that the exterior of the plunger remains in a dry and sanitary condition. An optional storage unit is also disclosed where the storage unit includes at least one UV element. Where the UV element decreases the amount of pathogens on the plumbing tool.

Claims (45)

1. A plunger for clearing a drain, the plunger comprising:

a plunger body comprising a handle, a gripping section and a lower body portion;

a reservoir located within the plunger body and terminating at an opening in the lower body portion, where the opening is adapted to direct fluid into the drain;

a piston slidably moveable in the reservoir, such that movement of the piston displaces fluid from a first reservoir portion to a second reservoir portion, where the second reservoir portion comprises at least one port in the lower body portion allowing liquid in the second reservoir portion to exit the plunger body at a location away from the upper body portion; and

a compliant member located adjacent to the opening, where the compliant member is sufficiently compliant to form a seal between the lower body portion and the drain allowing fluid to be drawn into the first reservoir portion via the opening where the compliant member comprises a cavity being open at an end opposite to the plunger body, and where at least one of the ports of the second reservoir is in fluid communication with the cavity.

2. The plunger of claim 1 , where the plunger body comprises an upper body portion and a lower body portion.

3. The plunger of claim 2 , where the handle and gripping portion are on the upper body portion.

4. The plunger of claim 2 , where the handle and gripping portion are on the lower body portion.

5. The plunger of claim 1 , where the second reservoir portion substantially surrounds the first reservoir portion.

6. The plunger of claim 5 , where the top of the first reservoir portion is in fluid communication with the top of the second reservoir portion to create a fluid flow-by path between reservoir portions.

7. The plunger of claim 1 , where the first reservoir portion is separated from the second reservoir portion by a wall.

8. The plunger of claim 1 , where the first reservoir portion comprises a sleeve located within the plunger body, and the second reservoir portion comprises a volume of the reservoir exterior to the sleeve.

9. The plunger of claim 1 , where the compliant member comprises a gasket.

10. The plunger of claim 9 , where the gasket comprises a plurality of apertures located at a bottom edge, and where at least one of the ports of the second reservoir is in fluid communication with the apertures to allow fluid to drain from the plunger.

11. The plunger of claim 1 , where at least a portion of an interior surface of the plunger body comprises a reflective surface to distribute UV light.

12. The plunger of claim 1 , further comprising at least one UV light source located within the plunger body.

13. The plunger of claim 12 , where the UV light source comprises UV-A or UV-C light.

14. The plunger of claim 1 , further comprising a photocatalyst in the plunger body, where the photocatalyst reacts with UV light from the UV light source.

15. The plunger of claim 14 , where the photocatalyst is in a material forming a portion of the body of the plunger.

16. The plunger of claim 14 , where the photocatalyst is placed in the plunger.

17. A plunger for clearing a drain, the plunger comprising:

a plunger body comprising a handle, a gripping section, and a lower body portion;

a reservoir located within the plunger body and terminating at an opening in the lower body portion, where the opening is adapted to direct fluid into the drain;

a piston slidably moveable in the reservoir, such that movement of the piston displaces fluid from a first reservoir portion to a second reservoir portion, where the second reservoir portion comprises at least one port in the lower body portion allowing liquid in the second reservoir portion to exit the plunger body at a location away from the upper body portion; and

a compliant member located adjacent to the opening, where the compliant member is sufficiently compliant to form a seal between the lower body portion and the drain allowing fluid to be drawn into the first reservoir portion via the opening, where the compliant member comprises a gasket comprising a plurality of apertures located at a bottom edge, and where at least one of the ports of the second reservoir is in fluid communication with the apertures to allow fluid to drain from the plunger.

18. A plunger for clearing a drain, the plunger comprising:

a plunger body comprising a handle, a gripping section, and a lower body portion;

a reservoir located within the plunger body and terminating at an opening in the lower body portion, where the opening is adapted to direct fluid into the drain;

a piston slidably moveable in the reservoir, such that movement of the piston displaces fluid from a first reservoir portion to a second reservoir portion, where the second reservoir portion comprises at least one port in the lower body portion allowing liquid in the second reservoir portion to exit the plunger body at a location away from the upper body portion; and

a compliant member located adjacent to the opening, where the compliant member is sufficiently compliant to form a seal between the lower body portion and the drain allowing fluid to be drawn into the first reservoir portion via the opening where the compliant member comprises a cavity being open at an end opposite to the plunger body, and where at least one of the ports of the second reservoir allows fluid to enter the cavity when fluid is displaced from the first reservoir portion to the second reservoir portion.

19. The plunger of claim 18 , where the plunger body comprises an upper body portion and a lower body portion.

20. The plunger of claim 19 , where the handle and gripping portion are on the upper body portion.

21. The plunger of claim 19 , where the handle and gripping portion are on the lower body portion.

22. The plunger of claim 18 , where the second reservoir portion substantially surrounds the first reservoir portion.

23. The plunger of claim 22 , where the top of the first reservoir portion is in fluid communication with the top of the second reservoir portion to create a fluid flow-by path between reservoir portions.

24. The plunger of claim 18 , where the first reservoir portion is separated from the second reservoir portion by a wall.

25. The plunger of claim 18 , where the first reservoir portion comprises a sleeve located within the plunger body, and the second reservoir portion comprises a volume of the reservoir exterior to the sleeve.

26. The plunger of claim 18 , where the compliant member comprises a gasket.

27. The plunger of claim 26 , where the gasket comprises a plurality of apertures located at a bottom edge, and where at least one of the ports of the second reservoir is in fluid communication with the apertures to allow fluid to drain from the plunger.

28. The plunger of claim 18 , where at least a portion of an interior surface of the plunger body comprises a reflective surface to distribute UV light.

29. The plunger of claim 18 , further comprising at least one UV light source located within the plunger body.

30. The plunger of claim 29 , where the UV light source comprises UV-A or UV-C light.

31. The plunger of claim 18 , further comprising a photocatalyst in the plunger body, where the photocatalyst reacts with UV light from the UV light source.

32. The plunger of claim 31 , where the photocatalyst is in a material forming a portion of the body of the plunger.

33. The plunger of claim 31 , where the photocatalyst is placed in the plunger.
