Abstract

In one aspect, the invention relates to a probe. The probe includes a sheath, a flexible, bi-directionally rotatable, optical subsystem positioned within the sheath, the optical subsystem comprising a transmission fiber, the optical subsystem capable of transmitting and collecting light of a predetermined range of wavelengths along a first beam having a predetermined beam size. The probe also includes an ultrasound subsystem, the ultrasound subsystem positioned within the sheath and adapted to propagate energy of a predetermined range of frequencies along a second beam having a second predetermined beam size, wherein a portion of the first and second beams overlap a region during a scan.

Claims (37)

1. A probe comprising:

a sheath;

a transformer comprising,

a first coil having a first plurality of windings; and

a second coil having a second plurality of windings, the second coil slidably disposed within the first coil;

a flexible, bi-directionally rotatable, optical subsystem positioned within the sheath, the optical subsystem comprises a transmission fiber, the optical subsystem capable of transmitting and collecting light of a predetermined range of wavelengths along a first beam having a predetermined beam size, wherein the transmission fiber is disposed within the second plurality of windings; and

an ultrasound subsystem, the ultrasound subsystem positioned within the sheath and adapted to propagate energy of a predetermined range of frequencies along a second beam having a second predetermined beam size.

2. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the first and second beams are substantially parallel and opposite in direction.

3. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the probe further comprises a coupling element, wherein the coupling element is adapted to rotate the transmission fiber and transmit a signal received from the ultrasound subsystem.

4. The probe of claim 3 , wherein the coupling element is selected from the group consisting of a metal coating applied to the transmission fiber, a portion of a torque wire, a metal tube, and a metal coil.

5. The probe of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal displacement between the centers of the optical subsystem and the ultrasound subsystem is less than a beam width of the ultrasound subsystem.

6. The probe of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal displacement between the centers of the optical subsystem and the ultrasound subsystem is less than a beam width of the optical subsystem.

7. The probe of claim 1 , wherein a relative orientation of the ultrasound subsystem and optical subsystem is chosen to reduce parasitic acoustic and optical reflections arising from the sheath.

8. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasound subsystem comprises a transducer.

9. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the first and second beams are substantially parallel.

10. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the second coil is a rotatable electrical coil and the first coil is a non-rotating electrical coil are positioned at a proximal end of the probe.

11. The probe of claim 1 , wherein the transmission fiber has a metal coating and the probe further comprises an insulated metallic tube, the insulated metallic tube encloses the metal-coated transmission fiber longitudinally whereby the transmission fiber and the tube form a coaxial transmission line.

13. A system for medical examination, the system comprises:

a first image processing device;

a second image processing device;

a transformer comprising:

a first coil having a first plurality of windings; and

a second coil having a second plurality of windings, the second coil slidably disposed within the first coil;

a probe, in electrical communication with the first and second image processing devices, the probe comprising:

a rotatable optical fiber disposed within the second coil;

a first sensor of an imaging system for optical coherence tomography having an optical fiber for directing and emitting light into an area adjacent to the rotatable optical fiber introduced into an examination area and for directing reflected light from the illuminated examination area to the first image processing device; and
