Composite material for tissue repair
The present disclosure provides a biocompatible composite and method for its use in repairing tissue defects, including defects in cartilage. The biocompatible composite includes a fibrous polymeric component and a polymerizable agent, which is capable of forming the biocompatible composite in situ at the site of a tissue defect. In embodiments, the repair site at which the biocompatible composite is to be applied may be treated with a priming agent, permitting polymerization of the polymerizable agent to the tissue located at the repair site.
1. A method comprising:
identifying a tissue defect for repair;
applying a polylactic acid fibrous polymeric component in combination with a polyethylene glycol polymerizable agent to the tissue defect; and
reacting the polymerizable agent with tissue by exposure to ultraviolet light at the site of the defect in the absence of a priming agent.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the polyethylene glycol polymerizable agent comprises possessing at least one free radical polymerizable group selected from the group consisting of acrylates, diacrylates, oligoacrylates, dimethacrylates, oligomethacrylates, and combinations thereof.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous polymeric component is combined with the polymerizable agent prior to application to the tissue defect.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fibrous polymeric component and the polymerizable agent form a biocompatible composite in the tissue defect that is covalently bound to the tissue defect surface.
5. The method of claim 1 , further comprises applying a therapeutic agent to the tissue defect.
6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising exposing the tissue defect to an enzyme prior to applying the fibrous polymeric component in combination with the polymerizable agent.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the enzyme comprises a chondroitinase.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue defect is in cartilage.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue defect is in tissue selected from the group consisting of bone, ligaments, tendons, skin, muscle and fascia.
10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a medicinal agent to the tissue defect.
