Abstract

Preparing data for transmission includes determining bit loading per frequency bin based on channel estimation data to create a data symbol, performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the interleaved data symbol array, mapping FFT data output sub-channel to a frequency bin to provide frequency mapped data, and performing an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) on the frequency mapped data to provide IFFT frequency mapped data suitable for transmission using one-dimensional amplitude modulated ultra wideband impulses representing the IFFT frequency mapped data. To recover the data a reverse process is used.

Claims (31)

1. A method of data transmission, comprising the following steps:

(a) receiving at least one stream of data;

(b) framing the at least one stream of data using Generic Frame Protocol (GFP) to provide GFP bytes;

(c) encoding the GFP bytes with control data to provide control data encoded bytes;

(d) encoding the control data encoded bytes with a Reed Solomon encoder to provide Reed Solomon encoded data;

(e) interleaving the Reed Solomon encoded data;

(f) determining bit loading per frequency bin based on channel estimation data to create a data symbol;

(g) performing a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on the interleaved data symbol array;

(h) mapping FFT data output sub-channel to a frequency bin to provide frequency mapped data;

(i) performing an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) on the frequency mapped data;

(j) repeating steps (a)-(i) until an IFFT memory is full;

(k) serially transmitting the IFFT data as one-dimensional amplitude modulated ultra wideband impulses over a hard-wired medium;

(l) receiving the ultra wideband impulses over the hard-wired medium;

(m) recovering the IFFT data from the ultra wideband impulses;

(n) performing a FFT on the IFFT data;

(o) mapping frequency to sub-channel to provide mapped data;

(p) equalizing the mapped data by sub-channel;

(q) performing an IFFT to provide an IFFT output;

(r) mapping the IFFT output to data symbols;

(s) dc-interleaving the data symbols;

(t) decoding the symbols using a Reed Solomon decoder to provide the control data encoded bytes; and

(u) decoding the control data encoded bytes to create GFP bytes.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising selecting characteristics of the ultra wideband impulses at least partially based on characteristics of the hard-wired medium.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the hard-wired medium is simultaneously used for wave based transmissions and transmission of the ultra wideband impulse.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the hard-wired medium is a telecommunications line.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the ultra wideband impulses co-exist with narrowband signals on the same hard-wired medium.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultra wideband impulses are spectrally shaped.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultra wideband impulses transmit data selected from the group consisting of: telephony data, high-speed data, digital video data, digital television data, Internet communication data, and audio data.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultra wideband impulses are transmitted on one frequency subcarrier channel on a single medium.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultra wideband impulses are transmitted on at least two frequency subcarrier channels on a single medium.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultra wideband impulse are multiplexed using a type of multiplexing selected from the group consisting of synchronous time division multiplexing, asynchronous time division multiplexing, code division multiplexing, and frequency division multiplexing.
