Abstract

A catheter shaft and methods for making and using the same. The catheter shaft may include a core portion, a cap portion, and one or more lumens. The cap portion may be disposed on or over a section of the core portion and define a region with a different exterior or interior surface characteristic. For example, the cap portion may define a lubricious region along the catheter shaft. Manufacturing the catheter shaft may include a modified co-extrusion process that incorporates a flow valve on at least one of the material supply lines so that the supply line can be regulated by a user.

Claims (28)

1. A medical device, comprising:

an elongate shaft including a core portion and a cap portion, the core portion extending along the length of the shaft and the cap portion disposed along a cap section of the core portion;

wherein the core portion extends proximally and distally of the cap portion;

wherein the core portion and the cap portion are defined by co-extruding a first material and a second material, the first material defining the core portion and the second material being co-extruded onto the cap section of the core portion so as to define the cap portion, the first material being different from the second material;

wherein the elongate shaft has a constant outer diameter along the length of the shaft including along the cap portion;

a first exterior surface characteristic defined on an exterior surface of the shaft by the core portion; and

a second exterior surface characteristic different from the first exterior surface characteristic defined on the exterior surface of the shaft by the cap portion.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the cap portion includes a lubricious polymer so that the second exterior surface characteristic is lubricity.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein one or more lumens are defined within the shaft.

4. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein two lumens are defined in the shaft.

5. A medical device, comprising:

a multi-lumen extruded shaft member having an exterior, a first section, a second section, a third section, and a length extending along the first section, the second section, and the third section, wherein the second section extends distally from the first section, wherein the third section extends distally from the second section, wherein the sections are seamlessly connected, and wherein the multi-lumen extruded shaft member has a constant outer diameter along the length;

wherein the first section includes a core material that defines a first surface characteristic on the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft member along the first section; and

wherein the second section includes the core material and a cap material disposed on the core material, the cap material defining a second surface characteristic on the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft member along the second section, the second surface characteristic being different from the first surface characteristic.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , wherein the third section includes the core material and defines the first surface characteristic on the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft member along the third section.

7. A medical device for use with an endoscope, comprising:

a multi-lumen extruded shaft having an exterior, a first section, a second section, and a third section, the sections being seamlessly connected and defining a length;

wherein the first section includes a core material that defines a first lubricity along the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft at the first section;

wherein the second section includes the core material and a cap material disposed on a portion of the core material such that the core material extends proximally and distally of the cap material, the cap material defining a second lubricity along the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft at the second section, the second lubricity being different from the first lubricity; and

wherein the multi-lumen extruded shaft has a constant outer diameter along the length.

8. The medical device of claim 7 , wherein the third section includes the core material and defines the first lubricity along the exterior of the multi-lumen extruded shaft at the third section.

9. A medical device, comprising:

an elongate shaft of constant outer diameter including a core portion and a cap portion, the core portion extending along the length of the shaft and the cap portion disposed along a cap section of the core portion;

wherein the core portion and the cap portion are defined by co-extruding a first material and a second material, the first material defining the core portion and the second material being co-extruded onto the cap section of the core portion so as to define the cap portion, the first material being different from the second material;

a first interior surface characteristic defined on an interior surface of the shaft by the core portion;

a second interior surface characteristic different from the first interior surface characteristic defined on the interior surface of the shaft by the cap portion; and

wherein the core portion extends proximally and distally of the cap portion.

10. The medical device of claim 9 , wherein the cap portion includes a lubricious polymer so that the second interior surface characteristic is lubricity.
