Abstract

A four way lumbar support for an automobile seat includes a wire array ( 16 ), a fixed frame ( 20 ), and a basculating arm. When in its extruded position, the basculating arm ( 50 ) exerts pressure on the wire array ( 16 ) thus providing lumbar support to the seat occupant at that point. A system of Bowden cables and sliding connections allows the basculating arm to slide vertically along the fixed frame so that the lumbar support may be provided at different heights within the seat.

Claims (30)

1. A lumbar support for a transportation vehicle comprising:

a wire array ( 92 ) having a slide piece ( 99 );

a guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an upper horizontal mounting rod ( 98 ) being in pivotal engagement with said wire array, fixedly attached to said slide piece ( 99 ), and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an elevation rod ( 124 ) fixedly attached to said guide rail;

a lower horizontal mounting rod ( 96 ) pivotally engaged with said wire array ( 92 ) and fixedly attached to said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

a fixed frame ( 114 ) adapted to mount on a seat backrest frame and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 ) such that said wire array ( 92 ) may move substantially vertically along said fixed frame ( 114 ); and

a traction cable ( 100 ) having a sleeve ( 102 ) and having a wire ( 104 ) disposed to slide axially within said sleeve, said sleeve and said wire each having a first end and a second end;

said first ends of said sleeve ( 102 ) and said wire ( 104 ) being operatively engaged with an actuator ( 97 ) for applying traction to said traction cable ( 100 ); and

said second end of said wire ( 104 ) being attached to said slide such that traction applied to said traction cable ( 100 ) by said actuator ( 97 ) moves said slide in a first direction thereby causing the upper horizontal mounting rod ( 98 ) to slide along said guide rail ( 94 , 95 ) compressing said wire array ( 92 ) into an arch shape.

2. A lumbar support for a transportation vehicle comprising:

a wire array ( 92 ) having a slide piece ( 99 );

a guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an upper horizontal mounting rod ( 98 ) being in pivotal engagement with said wire array, fixedly attached to said slide piece ( 99 ), and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an elevation rod ( 124 ) fixedly attached to said guide rail;

a lower horizontal mounting rod ( 96 ) pivotally engaged with said wire array ( 92 ) and fixedly attached to said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

a fixed frame ( 114 ) adapted to mount on a seat backrest frame and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 ) such that said wire array ( 92 ) may move substantially vertically along said fixed frame ( 114 ); and

a traction cable ( 100 ) having a sleeve ( 102 ) and having a wire ( 104 ) disposed to slide axially within said sleeve( 102 ), said sleeve ( 102 ) and said wire ( 104 ) each having a first end and a second end;

said first ends of said sleeve ( 102 ) and said wire ( 104 ) being operatively engaged with an actuator ( 97 ) for applying traction to said traction cable ( 100 ); and

said second end of said wire ( 104 ) being attached to said elevation rod ( 124 ) such that traction applied to said traction cable ( 100 ) by said actuator ( 116 ) moves said wire array ( 92 ) substantially vertically along said fixed frame.

3. A lumbar support for a transportation vehicle comprising:

a wire array ( 92 ) having a slide piece ( 99 );

a guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an upper horizontal mounting rod ( 98 ) being in pivotal engagement with said wire array, fixedly attached to said slide piece ( 99 ), and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

an elevation rod ( 124 ) fixedly attached to said guide rail;

a lower horizontal mounting rod ( 96 ) pivotally engaged with said wire array ( 92 ) and fixedly attached to said guide rail ( 94 , 95 );

a fixed frame ( 114 ) adapted to mount on a seat backrest frame and slidingly engaged with said guide rail ( 94 , 95 ) such that said wire array ( 92 ) may move substantially vertically along said fixed frame ( 114 ); and

a traction cable ( 100 ) having a sleeve ( 102 ) and having a wire ( 104 ) disposed to slide axially within said sleeve ( 102 ), said sleeve ( 102 ) and said wire ( 104 ) each having a first end and a second end;

said first ends of said sleeve ( 102 ) and said wire ( 104 ) being operatively engaged with an actuator ( 116 ) for applying traction to said traction cable ( 100 ); and

said second end of said wire ( 104 ) being attached to said lower horizontal mounting rod ( 96 ) such that traction applied to said traction cable by said actuator ( 116 ) moves said wire array substantially vertically along said fixed frame ( 114 ).
