Abstract

A process and method transforms solid waste into fuel. The system uses a pressure vessel; a condenser tank to permit selective addition of water to and evacuation of steam from the vessel; a heater to increase the temperature of the vessel; a vacuum pump to selectively reduce pressure within the vessel and to help evacuate steam from the vessel to the condenser tank; and a water pump to selectively add water from the condenser tank to the interior volume of the vessel.

Claims (8)

1. A method for transforming municipal solid waste into a converted mass including fuel, the method comprising:

loading a quantity consisting of municipal solid waste having a first weight to a vessel and transforming the waste into fuel by:

(i) adding a quantity consisting of water that is about 30-55% by weight of the first weight to the vessel;

(ii) using a vacuum pump to reduce pressure in the vessel to less than 0 psig; and

(iii) heating the municipal solid waste and water in the vessel by providing no more than 350 BTUs/lb of the first weight for no more than 90 minutes, wherein the pressure in the vessel is about 5-25 psig.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the quantity of municipal solid waste is transformed into a converted mass in a process time not greater than 75 minutes.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the volume of the converted mass is not greater than 50% of the volume of the unprocessed municipal solid waste.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein pressure is reduced in step (ii) to −5 to −14.5 psig.
