Abstract

A method includes positioning a medical device within a body between adjacent spinous processes, moving the medical device from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration within the body using an actuator removably coupled to the medical device, and removing the actuator from the body while the medical device remains between the adjacent spinous processes.

Claims (42)

1. A method, comprising:

positioning an implant having an end portion and a body portion within a patient's body such that the body portion is disposed between a pair of adjacent spinous processes; the end portion and body portion disposed along a longitudinal axis of the implant; and wherein, during positioning, the end portion and the body portion are both in a collapsed configuration;

expanding the end portion to a first expanded configuration while the body portion is disposed between the pair of spinous processes, wherein in the first expanded configuration the end portion extends farther outwardly from the longitudinal axis than when the end portion is in the collapsed configuration;

expanding the body portion to a second expanded configuration while the body portion is disposed between the pair of spinous processes, wherein in the second expanded configuration the body portion extends farther outwardly from the longitudinal axis than when the body portion is in the collapsed configuration;

wherein the steps of expanding the end portion and expanding the body portion occur independently of each other.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the positioning includes inserting percutaneously the implant into the patient's body through an opening having a size less than the size of the body portion of the implant in its expanded configuration.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the positioning includes inserting percutaneously the implant into the patient's body through an opening having a size less than a distance between the pair of adjacent spinous processes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expanding the body portion includes distracting the pair of adjacent spinous processes.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the expanding the body portion includes inflating at least a part of the body portion.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the end portion includes plastically deforming at least a part of the end portion.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the end portion includes applying an axial load to the implant.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the expanding the end portion of the implant is performed using a first actuator; and

the expanding the body portion of the implant is performed using a second actuator different from the first actuator.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein expanding the body portion includes inflating at least a part of the body portion and wherein expanding the end portion includes applying an axial load to the implant.

10. A method, comprising:

inserting through an incision and into a patient's body an implant having a retention portion and a distraction portion disposed sequentially along a longitudinal axis of the implant, the inserting being performed when the retention portion is in a collapsed configuration and the distraction portion is in a collapsed configuration, a size of the retention portion when the retention portion is in its collapsed configuration being less than a size of the incision, a size of the distraction portion when the distraction portion is in its collapsed configuration being less than the size of the incision;

positioning the implant such that at least a portion of the distraction portion is disposed between a pair of adjacent spinous processes in the patient's body;

moving the retention portion from its collapsed configuration to a first expanded configuration after the positioning, a size of the retention portion when in its first expanded configuration being greater than the size of the incision;

moving the distraction portion from its collapsed configuration to a second expanded configuration after the positioning, a size of the distraction portion when in its second expanded configuration being greater than the size of the incision;

wherein the steps of moving the retention portion and moving the distraction portion occur independently of each other.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving the retention portion is performed at a first time after the positioning; and the moving the distraction portion is performed at a second time after the positioning, the second time different than the first time.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving the distraction portion includes distracting the pair of adjacent spinous processes.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving the distraction portion includes inflating at least a part of the distraction portion.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving the retention portion includes deforming at least a part of the retention portion.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the moving the retention portion includes applying an axial load to the implant.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

the moving the retention portion of the implant is performed using a first actuator; and

the moving the distraction portion of the implant is performed using a second actuator different from the first actuator.

17. A method, comprising:

positioning an implant having an end portion and a body portion within a patient's body when the implant is in a first configuration; the end portion and the body portion disposed along sequentially a longitudinal axis of the implant; wherein, in the first configuration, the end portion and the body portion each have a first height normal to the longitudinal axis;

moving the implant to a second configuration different from the first configuration after the positioning; wherein, in the second configuration, the end portion has a second height normal to the longitudinal axis that is greater than the first height of the end portion and the body portion has a second height normal to the longitudinal axis that is equal to the first height of the body portion;

moving the implant to a third configuration different from the first configuration and the second configuration after the positioning; wherein, in the third configuration, the body portion has a third height normal to the longitudinal axis that is greater than the first height of the body portion and the end portion has a third height normal to the longitudinal axis that is equal to the second height of the end portion.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the positioning includes inserting percutaneously the implant into the patient's body through an opening in the patient's body having a size less than the second height of the end portion and the second height of the body portion.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the moving the implant to the second configuration is performed at a first time after the positioning; and

the moving the implant to the third configuration is performed at a second time after the positioning, the second time different than the first time.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the moving the implant to the second configuration is performed independent from the moving the implant to the third configuration.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the moving the implant to the second configuration includes distracting the pair of adjacent spinous processes.

22. The method of claim 17 wherein the moving the implant to the second configuration includes inflating at least a part of the body portion.

23. The method of claim 17 wherein the moving the implant to the third configuration includes deforming at least a part of the end portion.

24. The method of claim 17 , wherein the moving the implant to the third configuration includes applying an axial load to the implant.
