Abstract

A tire, tire lining or inner tube, containing a polymer composite, made of at least one rubber and/or at least one elastomer and a modified graphite oxide material, which is a thermally exfoliated graphite oxide with a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

Claims (27)

1. A tire, comprising a polymer composite, comprising at least one rubber and/or at least one elastomer and a modified graphite oxide material, comprising thermally exfoliated graphite oxide having a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

2. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 400 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

3. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 500 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

4. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a bulk density of from about 40 kg/m 3 to 0.1 kg/m 3 .

5. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a C/O ratio, after high temperature expansion, of from about 60/40 to 95/5.

6. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a C/O ratio, after high temperature expansion, of from about 65/35 to 85/15.

The tire of claim 1 , wherein the rubber and/or elastomer is selected from one or more of the group consisting of poly[4,4 1 -methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)- alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/di(propylene glycol)/polycaprolactone], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/polytetrahydrofuran], amine terminated polybutadienes, carboxyl terminated polybutadienes, polybutadiene, dicarboxy terminated butyl rubber, styrene/butadiene copolymers, polyisoprene, poly(styrene-co-butadiene), polydimethysiloxane, and natural latex rubber.

8. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 1100 m 2 /g.

9. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.1 and 20 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

10. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.1 to 5 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

11. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 1.5 and 5 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

12. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.5 to 2 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

13. The tire of claim 1 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has an aspect ratio of between 1000 and 10,000.

14. A tire lining, comprising a polymer composite, comprising a rubber and/or an elastomer and a modified graphite oxide material, comprising thermally exfoliated graphite oxide having a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

15. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 400 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

16. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 500 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.

17. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a bulk density of from about 40 kg/m 3 to 0.1 kg/m 3 .

18. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a C/O ratio, after high temperature expansion, of from about 60/40 to 95/5.

19. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a C/O ratio, after high temperature expansion, of from about 65/35 to 85/15.

The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the rubber and/or elastomer is selected from one or more of the group consisting of poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/poly(butylene adipate)], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/di(propylene glycol)/polycaprolactone], poly[4,4′-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate)-alt-1,4-butanediol/polytetrahydrofuran], amine terminated polybutadienes, carboxyl terminated polybutadienes, polybutadiene, dicarboxy terminated butyl rubber, styrene/butadiene copolymers, polyisoprene, poly(styrene-co-butadiene), polydimethysiloxane, and natural latex rubber.

21. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 1100 m 2 /g.

22. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.1 and 20 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

23. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.1 to 5 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

24. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 1.5 and 5 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

25. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the polymer composite comprises between 0.5 to 2 weight percent thermally exfoliated graphite oxide, based on the total weight of the composite.

26. The tire lining of claim 14 , wherein the thermally exfoliated graphite oxide has an aspect ratio of between 1000 and 10,000.

27. An inner tube, comprising a polymer composite, comprising a rubber and/or an elastomer and a modified graphite oxide material, comprising thermally exfoliated graphite oxide having a surface area of from about 300 m 2 /g to 2600 m 2 /g.
