Abstract

A base station receives a connection request from a mobile station. A scheduling module determines whether the fully used and/or segmented zones of the base station are oversubscribed. If the fully used zone is oversubscribed while the segmented zone is not, the mobile station having the largest CINR difference between the zones is assigned to the segmented zone. If the segmented zone is oversubscribed while the fully used zone is not, the mobile station having the smallest CINR difference between the zones is assigned to the fully used zone. If neither zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone allows modulation/coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the requesting mobile station is assigned to the segmented zone. If neither zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone does not allow modulation/coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the requesting mobile station is assigned to the fully used zone.

1. A base station comprising:

a transceiver providing communication with a plurality of mobile stations;

a memory storing a database indicating zones in which each mobile station is subscribed;

a processor coupled to the transceiver and the memory, the processor implementing a scheduling module;

wherein when the transceiver receives a request to connect from a first requesting mobile station of the plurality of mobile stations, the scheduling module determines whether a fully used zone of the base station is oversubscribed and whether a segmented zone of the base station is oversubscribed;

wherein when the fully used zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, the scheduling module assigns a second mobile station having a largest CINR (carrier to interference and noise ratio) difference between the fully used zone and the segmented zone to the segmented zone;

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is oversubscribed, the scheduling module assigns a third mobile station having a smallest CINR difference between the segmented zone and the fully used zone to the fully used zone;

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, the scheduling module determines whether the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone;

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the scheduling module assigns the first requesting mobile station to the segmented zone; and

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone does not allow modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the scheduling module assigns the first requesting mobile station to the fully used zone.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the segmented zone of subcarriers is divided into a first segment of subcarriers, a second segment of subcarriers, and a third segment of subcarriers.

3. The base station of claim 2 , wherein the first segment of subcarriers, the second segment of subcarriers, and the third segment of subcarriers are mutually exclusive to one another.

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the scheduling module determines whether the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone by taking into account a reduced availability of subcarriers available to mobile units assigned to the segmented zone compared to mobile units assigned to the fully used zone.

5. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver providing communication with the plurality of mobile stations uses orthogonal frequency division multiple access.

6. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the modulation and coding is one of:

quadrature amplitude modulation incorporating forward error correction coding; and

quadrature phase-shift keying incorporating forward error correction coding.

7. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the segmented zone allows modulation and coding that is more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone when modulation and coding available in the segmented zone would allow the segmented zone to be at least three times as spectrally efficient as the fully used zone.

8. A method of managing mobile station assignments on a base station, the method comprising:

receiving a request to connect to a base station from a first requesting mobile station;

determining whether a fully used zone of the base station is oversubscribed;

determining whether a segmented zone of the base station is oversubscribed;

when the fully used zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, assigning a second mobile station having a largest CINR (carrier to interference and noise ratio) difference between the fully used zone and the segmented zone to the segmented zone;

when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is oversubscribed, assigning a third mobile station having a smallest CINR difference between the segmented zone and the fully used zone to the fully used zone;

when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, determining whether the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone;

when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, assigning the first requesting mobile station to the segmented zone; and

when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone does not allow modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, assigning the first requesting mobile station to the fully used zone.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining whether the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone takes into account a reduced availability of subcarriers available to mobile units assigned to the segmented zone compared to mobile units assigned to the fully used zone.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the modulation and coding is one of:

quadrature amplitude modulation incorporating forward error correction coding; and

quadrature phase-shift keying incorporating forward error correction coding.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the determination that the segmented zone allows modulation and coding that is more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone only applies when modulation and coding available in the segmented zone would increase the spectral efficiency by at least a factor of three.

12. A base station comprising:

a transceiver providing communication with a plurality of mobile stations;

a memory storing a database indicating zones in which each mobile station is subscribed;

a processor coupled to the transceiver and the memory, the processor implementing a scheduling module;

wherein when the transceiver receives a request to connect from a first requesting mobile station of the plurality of mobile stations, the scheduling module determines whether a fully used zone of the base station is oversubscribed and whether a segmented zone of the base station is oversubscribed;

wherein when the fully used zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, the scheduling module balances mobile station subscriptions between the fully used zone and the segmented zone;

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is oversubscribed, the scheduling module balances mobile station subscriptions between the fully used zone and the segmented zone; and

wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, the scheduling module determines whether the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone.

13. The base station of claim 12 , wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone allows modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the scheduling module assigns the first requesting mobile station to the segmented zone.

14. The base station of claim 12 , wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed, the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, and the segmented zone does not allow modulation and coding more spectrally efficient than the fully used zone, the scheduling module assigns the first requesting mobile station to the fully used zone.

15. The base station of claim 12 , wherein when the fully used zone is oversubscribed and the segmented zone is not oversubscribed, the scheduling module balances mobile station subscriptions between the fully used zone and the segmented zone by assigning a second mobile station, having a largest CINR (carrier to interference and noise ratio) difference between the fully used zone and the segmented zone, to the segmented zone.

16. The base station of claim 12 , wherein when the fully used zone is not oversubscribed and the segmented zone is oversubscribed, the scheduling module balances mobile station subscriptions between the fully used zone and the segmented zone by assigning a second mobile station, having a smallest CINR (carrier to interference and noise ratio) difference between the segmented zone and the fully used zone, to the fully used zone.
