Abstract

A stepped balloon catheter prosthesis deployment system is disclosed for placement of a prosthesis across an Os opening from a main body lumen to a branch body lumen. The prosthesis comprises a radially expansible support at one end, a circumferentially extending link at the other end and at least one frond extending axially therebetween. The prosthesis is configured to be deployed from a stepped diameter balloon with the support in the branch body lumen, with the circumferentially extending link in the main lumen and the frond extendable across the Os.

Claims (28)

1. A method for treating a bifurcation between a main lumen and a branch lumen, comprising the steps of:

providing a radially expandable prosthesis, having a proximal end, a distal end, a support structure on the distal end, a circumferential link on the proximal end and at least two fronds extending axially between and being connected to the support structure and the circumferential link;

transluminally navigating the prosthesis to a treatment site; and

deploying the prosthesis at the site such that the support structure is expanded in the branch lumen by a first diameter section of a first deployment balloon, and the circumferential link is expanded in the main lumen by a second diameter section of the deployment balloon;

wherein the prosthesis is deployed such that all of the fronds connected to the circumferential link extend across the bifurcation into the main lumen in a direction opposite of blood flow.

2. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising the step of positioning a second inflatable balloon in the main lumen, and deforming at least one frond such that it conforms to at least a portion of the wall of the main lumen.

3. A method as in claim 2 , further comprising the step of deploying a stent in the main lumen.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the circumferential link connects the proximal end of all of the fronds.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the fronds includes at least three fronds.

6. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the first deployment balloon comprises a single, stepped balloon comprising the first diameter section and the second diameter section.

7. A method as in claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support structure comprises a drug coating, and at least a portion of the fronds and the circumferential link are without a drug coating.

8. A method as in claim 7 , wherein the drug coating is configured to produce at least one of a controlled drug release rate, a constant drug release rate, bi-modal drug release rate or a controlled concentration of drug proximate a target vessel wall.

9. A method as in claim 7 , wherein the drug coating is one of an anti-cell proliferative, anti-cell migration, anti-neo-plastic, or an anti-inflammatory drug.

10. A method as in claim 7 , wherein the drug coating is configured to reduce an incidence or amount of restensosis.

11. A method as in claim 7 , wherein the drug coating includes a first drug and second drug.

12. A method as in claim 7 , wherein the drug coating includes a first coating and a second coating.

13. A method as in claim 12 , wherein the first coating is configured to produce a first drug release rate and the second coating is configured to produce a second drug release rate.

14. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the first diameter section and the second diameter section of the first deployment balloon comprise portions of the same balloon.

15. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the circumferential link is bioabsorbable.

16. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the circumferential link is bioerodeable.

17. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the circumferential link comprises two filaments provided between each adjacent pairs of fronds.

18. A method as in claim 1 , wherein the circumferential link comprises a plurality of filaments provided between adjacent pairs of fronds.

19. A method of treating a patient, comprising the steps of:

providing a catheter having a balloon with at least a first section having a relatively smaller inflated diameter and a second section having a relatively larger inflated diameter and a prosthesis having a support structure, a circumferential link spaced from the support structure, and at least two fronds extending axially between the support structure and the circumferential link, wherein the support structure is mounted on the first section of the balloon and the circumferential link and the at least two fronds are at least partially mounted on the second section of the balloon;

positioning the balloon across the opening of a branch vessel from a main vessel; and

inflating the balloon to a first pressure such that the first section is inflated at least partially within the branch vessel and the second section is inflated at least partially within the main vessel to expand the circumferential link around the periphery of the main vessel and subsequently inflating the balloon to a second pressure greater than the first pressure such that the support structure is expanded in the branch vessel.

20. A method as in claim 19 , wherein after the balloon is inflated, all of the fronds extend from the opening to the circumferential link in a same direction within the main vessel.

21. A method as in claim 19 , wherein after the balloon is inflated, all of the fronds extend within the main vessel in an upstream direction from the opening.
