Abstract

The present invention relates generally to the treatment and prevention of diseases characterized by excess cell proliferation and/or activation. In particular, the present invention provides compositions and methods to suppress the activation and/or proliferation of various cells. In some preferred embodiments, the present invention provides compositions and methods to suppress the activation and/or proliferation of mesenchymally derived cells (including, but not limited to hepatic stellate cells), as well as cells with abnormal growth characteristics. In some particularly preferred embodiments, the present invention provides compositions and methods to inhibit or eliminate fibrosis. In alternative preferred embodiments, the present invention provides compositions and methods to induce fibrosis. In still further embodiments, the present invention provides methods and compositions to treat and/or prevent cancer.

Claims (6)

1. A peptide comprising a synthetic N-acetyl-KAVD-C-aldehyde peptide (Ac-KAVD-CHO), or a variant thereof in which the alanine is replaced with one of the group consisting of arginine, asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, tryptophan, and valine.

2. A composition a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier in combination with comprising a synthetic N-acetyl-KAVD-C-aldehyde peptide (Ac-KAVD-CHO), or a variant thereof in which the alanine is replaced with one of the group consisting of arginine, asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, tryptophan, and valine.

3. The composition of claim 2 , comprising said synthetic N-acetyl-KAVD-C-aldehyde peptide (Ac-KAVD-CHO).

4. A composition comprising the peptide of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

5. A method for increasing cell apoptosis, comprising administering to a mammalian subject in need thereof the composition of claim 2 in an amount effective to increase cell apoptosis.

6. A method for increasing cell apoptosis, comprising contacting a population of cells with the peptide of claim 1 , wherein said contacting is in vitro and is under conditions effective to increase cell apoptosis.
