Abstract

A method includes positioning a medical device within a body between adjacent spinous processes, moving the medical device from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration within the body using an actuator removably coupled to the medical device, and removing the actuator from the body while the medical device remains between the adjacent spinous processes.

Claims (46)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an implant having a distal end portion and a body portion,

the distal end portion configured to move between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration when the body portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes;

the body portion configured to move between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration when the body portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes and independent from when the distal end portion is moved between it's collapsed configuration and its expanded configuration.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body portion of the implant is configured to contact the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the body portion is in it's expanded configuration.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body portion of the implant is configured to distract the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the body portion is moved from it's collapsed configuration to it's expanded configuration.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body portion of the implant is configured to move repeatedly between it's collapsed configuration and its expanded configuration.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the body portion of the implant or the distal end portion of the implant includes an inflatable member.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion of the implant is configured to limit lateral movement of the implant relative to the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the distal end portion is in it's expanded configuration.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion of the implant includes a plurality of projections configured to extend outwardly from the implant when the distal end portion is it's expanded configuration.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the body portion of the implant or the distal end portion of the implant includes a deformable portion.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the body portion of the implant or the distal end portion of the implant is configured to move between its collapsed configuration and it's expanded configuration in response to an axial load applied to the implant.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the implant further includes a proximal end portion configured to move between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration when the body portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes and independent from when the distal end portion is moved between it's collapsed configuration and it's expanded configuration, and independent from when the body portion is moved between its collapsed configuration and it's expanded configuration.

11. An apparatus, comprising:

an implant having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion configured to be disposed between a pair of adjacent spinous processes;

the first portion having a first configuration and a second configuration, the first portion of the implant configured to limit lateral movement of the implant relative to the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the first portion is in the second configuration;

the second portion of the implant having a first configuration and a second configuration, the second portion of the implant configured to distract the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the second portion is moved from it's first configuration to it's second configuration;

wherein at least one of the second portion of the implant or the first portion of the implant includes an inflatable member.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein:

the second portion of the implant is configured to move between it's first configuration and it's second configuration when the second portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes; and

the first portion of the implant is configured to move between it's first configuration and it's second configuration when the second portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein:

the first portion of the implant is a distal end portion configured to limit lateral movement of the implant relative to the pair of adjacent spinous processes in a first direction;

the implant further includes a proximal end portion having a first configuration and a second configuration, the second portion of the implant disposed between the distal end portion of the implant and the proximal end portion of implant, the proximal end portion of the implant configured to limit lateral movement of the implant relative to the pair of adjacent spinous processes in a second direction opposite the first direction when the proximal end portion is in the second configuration.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the second portion of the implant has a first size when in it's first configuration and a second size when in it's second configuration, the second size greater than the first size.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the first portion of the implant includes a deformable portion configured to deform when the first portion is moved between it's first configuration and it's second configuration.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the implant is configured to be inserted percutaneously into a patient's body.

17. An apparatus, comprising:

an implant having a first portion and a second portion, the second portion configured to be disposed between a pair of adjacent spinous processes;

the first portion having a first configuration and a second configuration, the first portion of the implant configured to limit lateral movement of the implant relative to the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the first portion is in the second configuration;

the second portion of the implant having a first configuration and a second configuration, the second portion of the implant configured to distract the pair of adjacent spinous processes when the second portion is moved from it's first configuration to it's second configuration;

wherein the second portion of the implant is configured to move between its first configuration and it's second configuration independent from when the first portion of the implant is moved between it's first configuration and its second configuration.

18. An apparatus comprising:

an implant having a distal end portion and a body portion configured to be disposed between a pair of adjacent spinous processes;

the distal end portion configured to be moved between a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration by a first actuator when the body portion of the implant is disposed between the pair of adjacent spinous processes;
