Abstract

Disclosed are nitric oxide delivery agents and methods of their use, more specifically to photoactive compounds, which are able to perform targeted delivery of nitric oxide in vitro and in vivo and are useful for medicinal applications including, but not limited, to blood pressure regulation and cancer treatment.

Claims (17)

1. A method of inducing cGMP production by a cell, comprising:

a) providing a non-porphyrin metal nitrosyl that releases nitric oxide (NO) upon illumination with light of low radiant power, wherein said non-porphyrin metal nitrosyl has a formula selected from the group consisting of

wherein

E is N, O or S,

N a is carboxamido-N;

M is a group 7 or group 8 transition metal in a +2, +3 or +4 oxidation state, and is not Fe II , and

b) contacting said cell with said composition under conditions suitable for causing said cell to produce cGMP.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said conditions comprise illuminating said cell with ultraviolet light to cause said metal nitrosyl to release NO.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said conditions comprise illuminating said cell with visible light to cause said metal nitrosyl to release NO.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said cell comprises a muscle cell.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said muscle cell comprises a smooth muscle cell.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein said smooth muscle cell is comprised in a blood vessel, and said conditions produce vasodilation of said blood vessel.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said cell is selected from the group consisting of pre-cancerous cell, tumor cell, and cancer cell.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said cell comprises a genital cell.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said contacting with said composition comprises administering said composition by a method selected from the group consisting of injection, catheter delivery, transdermal patch delivery, topical delivery, endoscopic delivery, and delivery by implantation.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said conditions comprise illuminating said cell with a light source.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein said light source is selected from the group consisting of catheter source, endoscope source, and fiber-optic source.
