Abstract

In accordance with the invention, the development and use of antibodies within the digestive tract is provided. Antibodies are described that are used to treat disorders associated with altered permeability of the digestive tract. Antibodies are described with increased stability within the environment of the digestive tract. Antibodies are described with enhanced permeability to a compromised digestive tract.

Claims (22)

1. A method of treating damage to the mucosal barrier of the digestive tract of a patient caused by exposure to radiation comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising an antibody specific for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) wherein said damage to the mucosal barrier is altered permeability of the mucosal barrier, inflammation of the mucosal barrier, ulceration of the mucosal barrier or any combination thereof and wherein administration is topical administration to the oral cavity, oral administration, rectal administration, or any combination thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antibody is a polyclonal antibody.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the antibody is a polyclonal antibody derived from milk or colostrum.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the damage to the patient caused by exposure to radiation is mucositis.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the mucositis is oral mucositis, esophageal mucositis or intestinal mucositis.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the composition is administered topically to the oral cavity for treatment of oral or esophageal mucositis.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the composition is administered orally for treatment of intestinal mucositis.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the composition is administered orally in a dosage form suitable for oral administration to the gastrointestinal tract.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the composition is administered rectally for treatment of intestinal mucositis.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein exposure to radiation is caused by radiation therapy.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the exposure to radiation occurs outside of the context of radiation therapy.

12. A method of treating radiation-induced mucositis in a patient comprising administering to the patient a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising an antibody specific for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) wherein administration is topical administration to the oral cavity, oral administration, rectal administration or any combination thereof.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the antibody is a polyclonal antibody.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the antibody is a polyclonal antibody obtained from milk or colostrum.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the radiation-induced mucositis causes altered permeability of the digestive tract, inflammation of the digestive tract, ulceration of the digestive tract or any combination thereof.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the mucositis is oral mucositis, esophageal mucositis or intestinal mucositis.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the composition is administered topically to the oral cavity for treatment of oral or esophageal mucositis.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the composition is administered orally for treatment of intestinal mucositis.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the composition is administered orally in a dosage form suitable for oral administration to the gastrointestinal tract.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the composition is administered rectally for treatment of intestinal mucositis.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein radiation-induced mucositis is caused by radiation therapy.

22. The method of claim 12 , wherein radiation-induced mucositis is caused by exposure to radiation outside of the context of radiation therapy.
