Abstract

An extract of the marine algae, Sarcodiotheca , and more particularly Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii , is described for use in cosmetic compositions. A biofermentation of Sarcodiotheca , such as for example S. gaudichaudii , is also described. This marine bioferment is useful as a skin care active ingredient for anti-aging cosmetic applications, and particularly useful when used in combination with an extracts of red algae, such as Chondrus crispus.

Claims (11)

1. A cosmetic ingredient comprising a ferment of Sarcodiotheca obtained by fermenting a slurry of Sarcodiotheca pulp and water with a live yeast culture.

2. The cosmetic ingredient of claim 1 wherein the Sarcodiotheca is Sarcodiotheca gaudichaudii.

3. The cosmetic ingredient of claim 1 wherein the yeast culture comprises Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

4. A cosmetic composition comprising the cosmetic ingredient of claim 1 and at least one cosmetically acceptable additive.

5. The composition of claim 4 further comprising a second extract of red algae.

6. The composition of claim 5 wherein the red algae is Chondrus crispus.

7. The cosmetic ingredient of claim 1 further comprising adding a Chondrus extract to the ferment of Sarcodiotheca to form a blend of the ferment and the Chondrus extract.

8. The cosmetic ingredient of claim 7 wherein the ratio of Chondrus extract to the Sarcodiotheca ferment is 80:20.

9. The cosmetic ingredient of claim 7 further comprising at least one cosmetically acceptable additive.

10. A method for improving a condition of aging skin comprising applying to skin in need thereof an effective amount of the composition of claim 4 .
