Abstract

A link is a software abstraction that represents a direct connection between two CoCo nodes. The link layer detects the presence of neighboring devices and establishes links to them. A protocol abstraction layer converts data frames that arrive on network interfaces into packet objects used by the COCO Protocol Suite.

Claims (35)

1. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions operable to enable a first network node to perform a method of establishing a secure communication link with a second network node over which packets may be sent, the method comprising:

receiving a first link setup packet from the second network node, the first link setup packet including a work token generated by a computation of the second network node and a timestamp corresponding to a time at which the first link setup packet was initiated;

determining whether the work token has expired based on the timestamp, a current time and a predetermined validity time interval of the work token, wherein the predetermined validity time interval defines a duration that the work token is valid; and

if the work token has not expired, providing to the second network node a second link setup packet including a key generated by the first network node.

2. The medium of claim 1 , further comprising:

if the work token has expired, ignoring the first link setup packet, wherein no response is returned by the first node to the second node.

3. The medium of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

generating the key.

4. The medium of claim 3 , wherein generating the key comprises:

validating the computation of the second network node.

5. The medium of claim 3 , wherein the key is a Diffie-Hellman key.

6. The medium of claim 3 , wherein the method further comprises:

caching the key.

7. The medium of claim 3 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining which of only one of the first network node and the second network node is to apply an encryption method to packets sent over the communication link.

8. A method that enables a first network node to establish a secure communication link with a second network node over which packets may be sent, the method comprising:

receiving at the first network node a first link setup packet from the second network node, the first link setup packet including a work token generated by a computation of the second network node and a timestamp corresponding to a time at which the first link setup packet was initiated;

determining at the network node whether the work token has expired based on the timestamp, a current time and a predetermined validity time interval of the work token, wherein the predetermined validity time interval defines a duration that the work token is valid; and

if the work token has not expired, communicating a second link setup packet from the first network node to the second network node, wherein the second link setup packet includes a key generated by the first network node.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

if the work token has expired, ignoring the first link setup packet, wherein no response is returned by the first node to the second node.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises:

generating the key.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein generating the key comprises:

validating the computation of the second network node.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the key is a Diffie-Hellman key.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the method further comprises:

caching the generated key.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining which of only one of the first network node and the second network node is to apply an encryption method to packets sent over the communication link.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises:

checking for the key from a cache of keys, wherein the key is associated with the second network node; and

communicating the second link setup packet from the first network node to the second network node when the key is included in the cache of keys.

16. The method of claim 8 , wherein the timestamp is a time that the work token was generated.

17. The method of claim 8 , wherein the timestamp is a time that the first link setup packet was initiated.
