Abstract

The invention provides a composition comprising at least one olefin multi-block interpolymer; at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer; and optionally at least one thermoplastic polyurethane. The invention also provides for articles prepared from the inventive compositions and for methods for making the same.

Claims (46)

1. A composition comprising the following:

A) at least one olefin multi-block interpolymer, and

B) at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer comprises one or more of the following functional groups covalently bonded to the olefin-based polymer backbone:

(a)

wherein the structure of (a) R 1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical, and R 2 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms, and optionally may be substituted with a heteroatom containing group; or

(b)

wherein the structure of (b) R 1 is a divalent hydrocarbon radical; or

(c)

wherein the structure of (c) R 1 and R 2 are, independently, either hydrogen or a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbyl radical, which is linear or branched; R 4 is a divalent hydrocarbyl radical, which is linear or branched; X is OH or NHR 5 , where R 5 is a hydrocarbyl radical, which is linear or branched, or a hydroxyethyl group and

wherein said olefin multi-block interpolymer is an ethylene/α-olefin multi-block interpolymer, which has one or more of the following characteristics:

(1) an average block index greater than zero and up to 1.0 and a molecular weight distribution, Mw/Mn, greater than 1.3;

(2) at least one molecular fraction which elutes between 40° C. and 130° C. when fractionated using TREF, characterized in that the fraction has a block index of at least 0.5 and up to 1;

(3) an Mw/Mn from 1.7 to 3.5, at least one melting point, Tm, in degrees Celsius, and a density, d, in grams/cubic centimeter, wherein the numerical values of Tm and d correspond to the relationship:

Tm>− 2002.9+4538.5( d )-2422.2( d ) 2 ;

(4) an Mw/Mn from 1.7 to 3.5, and is characterized by a heat of fusion, ΔH in J/g, and a delta quantity, ΔT, in degrees Celsius, defined as the temperature difference between the tallest DSC peak and the tallest CRYSTAF peak, wherein the numerical values of ΔT and ΔH have the following relationships:

Δ T>− 0.1299(Δ H )+62.81 for Δ H greater than zero and up to 130 J/g,

Δ T≧ 48° C. for Δ H greater than 130 J/g,

wherein the CRYSTAF peak is determined using at least 5 percent of the cumulative polymer, and if less than 5 percent of the polymer has an identifiable CRYSTAF peak, then the CRYSTAF temperature is 30° C.;

(5) an elastic recovery, Re, in percent at 300 percent strain and 1 cycle measured with a compression-molded film of the ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer, and has a density, d, in grams/cubic centimeter, wherein the numerical values of Re and d satisfy the following relationship when ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer is substantially free of a cross-linked phase:

(6) a molecular fraction which elutes between 40° C. and 130° C. when fractionated using TREF, characterized in that the fraction has a molar comonomer content of at least 5 percent higher than that of a comparable random ethylene interpolymer fraction eluting between the same temperatures, wherein said comparable random ethylene interpolymer has the same comonomer(s) and has a melt index, density, and molar comonomer content (based on the whole polymer) within 10 percent of that of the ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer; or

(7) a storage modulus at 25° C., G′(25° C.), and a storage modulus at 100° C., G′(100° C.), wherein the ratio of G′(25° C.) to G′(100° C.) is in the range of 1:1 to 9:1.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the functionalized olefin-based polymer is (1) a functionalized ethylene/α-olefin interpolymer wherein the α-olefin is selected from the group consisting of 1-propene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, and 1-octene or (2) a functionalized propylene/ethylene interpolymer.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer comprises one or more of the following functional group covalently bonded to the olefin-based polymer backbone:

(a)

wherein the structure of (a) R 1 is selected is selected from the group consisting of alkylene and phenylene and wherein R 2 is an alkyl or aryl group.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer comprises one or more of the following functional group covalently bonded to the olefin-based polymer backbone:

(b)

wherein the structure of (b) R 1 is selected selected from the group consisting of ethylene, propylene, butylene, and alkylene substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of alkoxy and phenyl groups.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer comprises one or more of the following functional group covalently bonded to the olefin-based polymer backbone:

(b)

wherein the structure of (b) R 1 is —CH(OCH 2 CH 2 Me)CH 2 — or -orthophenylene-CH 2 —.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer is present in an amount less than, or equal to, 20 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one functionalized olefin-based polymer is present in an amount less than, or equal to, 10 weight percent, based on the total weight of the composition.

8. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one filler.

9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the filler is a talc.

10. The composition of claim 9 wherein the filler is a talc which has been surface modified with at least one amino silane.

11. The composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one thermoplastic polyurethane.

12. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane comprises chemical units derived from (1) at least one polyester and (2) at least one aromatic or aliphatic diisocyanate.

13. The composition of claim 12 , wherein the polyester chemical unit is formed from caprolactone.

14. The composition of claim 11 wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane comprises chemical units derived from a polyester and a mixture of 1,3-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane and 1,4-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the weight ratio of the 1,3-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane to the 1,4-bis(isocyanatomethyl)cyclohexane is 1 to 1.

16. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane comprises a monomeric unit derived from diol derivative derived from N-octyl pyrrolidone.

17. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane comprises a monomeric unit derived from polytetramethylene ether glycol.

18. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane comprises a monomeric unit derived from a polyether.

19. The composition of claim 11 , wherein the at least one thermoplastic polyurethane has a density of from 0.90 g/cc to 1.3 g/cc and a melt index ( 12 ) from 1 g/10 min to 100 g/10 min.
