Abstract

A magnetic attachment system for attaching a first object to a second object. A first magnet structure is attached to the first object and a second magnet structure is attached to the second object. The first and second objects are attached by virtue of the magnetic attraction between the first magnet structure and second magnet structure. The magnet structures comprise magnetic elements arranged in accordance with patterns based on various codes. In one embodiment, the code has certain autocorrelation properties. In further embodiments the specific type of code is specified. In a further embodiment, an attachment and a release configuration may be achieved by a simple movement of the magnet structures. In a further embodiment, the magnetic field structure may comprise multiple structures based on multiple codes.

Claims (24)

1. A magnetic attachment system comprising:

a base; and

a plurality of magnetic structures associated with said base, each magnetic structure of said plurality of magnetic structures comprising a respective plurality of magnetic field sources comprising one or more contiguous pieces of permanent magnet material, said plurality of magnetic structures comprising a plurality of polarity regions, at least one magnetic structure of said plurality of magnetic structures being based on a respective pattern having a respective autocorrelation function characterized by a single peak autocorrelation position and a plurality of off-peak autocorrelation positions, wherein a greatest off-peak autocorrelation magnitude of said plurality of off-peak autocorrelation positions is less than half of the peak autocorrelation magnitude at said peak autocorrelation position.

2. The magnetic attachment system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of polarity regions comprises at least one of a north-south-north polarity sequence or a south-north-south polarity sequence, and wherein said greatest off-peak autocorrelation magnitude is approximately one-fourth of said peak autocorrelation magnitude.

3. The magnetic attachment system of claim 2 , wherein at least two magnetic field sources of at least one of said respective plurality of magnetic field sources are contained in a single contiguous piece of magnetic material.

4. The magnetic attachment system of claim 3 , wherein said at least two magnetic field sources of at least one of said respective plurality of magnetic field sources have the same polarity.

5. The magnetic attachment system of claim 3 , wherein said at least two magnetic field sources of at least one of said respective plurality of magnetic field sources have different polarities.

6. The magnetic attachment system of claim 1 , wherein said permanent magnet material comprises neodymium iron boron.

7. The magnetic attachment system of claim 2 , wherein said plurality of magnetic structures have a composite autocorrelation function having a single peak attract force composite autocorrelation position and a plurality of off-peak attract force composite autocorrelation positions, wherein the peak attract force composite autocorrelation magnitude at said peak attract force autocorrelation position is at least twice a greatest off-peak attract force composite autocorrelation magnitude of said plurality of off-peak attract force composite autocorrelation positions.

8. The magnetic attachment system of claim 7 , wherein said plurality of magnetic structures comprises a plurality of correlated magnets.

9. The magnetic attachment system of claim 7 , wherein at least one of said respective plurality of magnetic structures is not coded.

10. The magnetic attachment system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of magnetic structures produces a magnetic field in accordance with a Barker code.

11. A magnetic attachment system comprising:

a base comprising a first plurality of magnetic structures, each of said first plurality of magnetic structures comprising a respective first plurality of magnetic field sources arranged according to a respective first pattern, said respective first plurality of magnetic field sources comprising one or more respective contiguous pieces of neodymium iron boron, at least one magnetic structure of said first plurality of magnetic structures being based on a respective pattern having a respective autocorrelation function characterized by a single peak magnitude position and a plurality of off-peak magnitude positions, wherein the greatest off-peak autocorrelation magnitude is less than half of the peak autocorrelation magnitude; and

a panel comprising a second plurality of magnetic structures, each magnetic structure of said second plurality of magnetic structures being complementary to a corresponding magnetic structure of said first plurality of magnetic structures.
