Abstract

One gamma radiation source comprises 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof, wherein the 75 Selenium is provided in the form of one or more thermally stable compounds, alloys or mixtures with one or more nonmetals which upon irradiation do not produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would unacceptably interfere with the gamma radiation of 75 Selenium. A further gamma radiation source comprises 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof, wherein the 75 Selenium is provided in the form of one or more thermally stable compounds, alloys or mixtures with one or more metals or nonmetals, the neutron irradiation of which does produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would acceptably complement the gamma radiation of 75 Selenium. Further, the gamma radiation source may have components that are separately irradiated before being combined and the components may be of natural isotopic composition or of isotopically modified composition so that the subsequent radiation peaks may also be adjusted in relative frequency.

Claims (20)

1. A gamma radiation source comprising: 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof, which is combined with one or more metals or nonmetals in the form of one or more thermally stable compounds, compositions or alloys, wherein said one or more metals or nonmetals is selected from the group consisting of Antimony, Cerium, Gadolinium, Samarium, Thulium, Zinc and Ytterbium, the neutron irradiation of which does produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would acceptably complement or supplement the gamma radiation of 75 Selenium.

2. A gamma radiation source as defined in claim 1 , wherein the one or more metals or nonmetals may comprise a natural isotopic composition, an enriched isotopic composition, or a depleted isotopic composition.

3. A gamma radiation source as defined in claim 2 , wherein the gamma radiation peaks of the composition may adjusted in relative frequency.

4. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 3 , wherein the radiation spectrum of said one or more metals or nonmetals falls into a lower radiation zone, a primary radiation zone or an upper radiation zone of a primary radiation component.

5. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 4 , wherein the one or more metals or nonmetals are irradiated separately before being combined with the primary radiation component.

6. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 4 , wherein the one or more metals or nonmetals are irradiated after being combined with the primary radiation component.

7. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 4 wherein the primary radiation component is 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof.

8. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 5 wherein the primary radiation component is 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof.

9. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 6 wherein the primary radiation component is 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof.

10. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 8 , wherein said one or more metals or nonmetals is selected from the group consisting of Thulium, Iridium, and Zinc.

11. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 9 , wherein said one or more metals or nonmetals is selected from the group consisting of Thulium, Iridium, and Zinc.

12. The gamma radiation source as defined in claim 7 , wherein said one or more metals or nonmetals is selected from the group consisting of Thulium, Iridium, and Zinc.

13. A method for providing a gamma radiation source as defined in the claim 1 , said method comprising:

providing 75 Selenium or a precursor thereof;

providing one or more metals or nonmetals;

irradiating 75 Selenium and the one or more metals or nonmetals separately which does produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would acceptably supplement or complement the gamma radiation of 75 Selenium;

forming 75 Selenium into one or more thermally stable compounds or compositions, alloys or mixtures with the one or more metals or nonmetals; and

forming the compounds, compositions, alloys, or mixtures into the gamma radiation source.

14. The method for providing as defined in claim 13 , wherein the one or more metals or nonmetals are selected to comprise a natural isotopic composition, an enriched isotopic composition, or a depleted isotopic composition.

15. The method for providing as defined in claim 14 , wherein gamma radiation peaks of the composition is adjusted in relative frequency.
