Systems and methods for effecting cessation of tobacco use
The invention relates generally to a system and method for treating conditions responsive to nicotine therapy. More specifically, the invention relates to pulmonary administration of a nicotine containing formulation to effect smoking cessation.
1. A system for simulated tobacco-free smoking, the system comprising:
a first group of containers wherein each container of the first group confines a dosage of a liquid tobacco-free nicotine formulation that is aerosolizable and inhalable;
a second group of containers wherein each container of the second group confines a dosage of a liquid tobacco-free nicotine formulation that is aerosolizable and inhalable and wherein the second group is different from the first group of containers in the amount of nicotine in the containers; and
an inhaler device configured to accept a container from the first group or second group of containers and aerosolize all of the nicotine formulation confined in a container for delivery in a single inhalation;
wherein the dosage is present in the container in a sufficient amount, and the inhaler device is characterized such that when the formulation is aerosolized it provides an aerosol of particles that when inhaled by a human provides an arterial nicotine concentration of at least 15 ng/ml in 1 minute or less.
2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the particles of the aerosol have a diameter in a range of from about 2 μm to about 3 μm.
3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the formulation has a pH of 8.5 or more.
