Abstract

A fiber optic enclosure assembly includes a housing having an interior region and a bearing mount disposed in the interior region of the housing. A cable spool is connectedly engaged with the bearing mount such that the cable spool selectively rotates within the housing. A termination module disposed on the cable spool so that the termination module rotates in unison with the cable spool. A method of paying out a fiber optic cable from a fiber optic enclosure includes rotating a cable spool, which has a subscriber cable coiled around a spooling portion of the cable spool, about an axis of a housing of the fiber optic enclosure until a desired length of subscriber cable is paid out. A termination module is disposed on the cable spool.

Claims (27)

1. A method of paying out a fiber optic cable from a fiber optic enclosure comprising:

dispensing the fiber optic cable from an interior of the fiber optic enclosure through rotation of a cable spool around which the fiber optic cable is mounted, the cable spool being mounted to and rotatable relative to the fiber optic enclosure, the fiber optic cable having connectorized ends plugged into first ports of optical adapters mounted to the cable spool;

mounting the fiber optic enclosure to a surface;

routing a plurality of optical fibers into the fiber optic enclosure and to the cable spool; and

plugging a plurality of optical connectors that terminate the optical fibers into second ports of the adapters mounted at the cable spool.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fixing the spool at a rotational position relative to the fiber optic enclosure.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein fixing the spool includes pinning the spool to the fiber optic enclosure.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein routing the optical fibers into the fiber optic enclosure comprises routing the optical fibers through slots defined in a sealing member that is disposed at a periphery of the fiber optic enclosure.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic enclosure is mounted to the surface prior to dispensing the fiber optic cable from the interior of the fiber optic enclosure.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fiber optic enclosure is mounted to the surface after dispensing the fiber optic cable from the interior of the fiber optic enclosure.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein mounting the fiber optic enclosure to a surface comprises mounting the fiber optic enclosure to a wall.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein mounting the fiber optic enclosure to a surface comprises mounting the fiber optic enclosure to a pole.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein dispensing the fiber optic cable through rotation of the cable spool comprises pulling on a free end of the fiber optic cable to rotate the cable spool.

10. A fiber optic enclosure comprising:

an outer housing having side walls extending between end walls, the side walls being longer than the end walls to define an elongated interior, a first of the end walls defining a first port;

a cable spool mounted within the elongated interior of the outer housing so that the cable spool is offset towards a second of the end walls away from the first port, the cable spool being rotatable relative to the outer housing; and

a plurality of adapters mounted to an axial end of the cable spool to rotate with the spool relative to the outer housing.

11. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 10 , wherein a first of the side walls defines a second port.

12. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 11 , further comprising a multi-fiber cable that extends into the interior of the outer housing through the second port and wraps around the cable spool so that the multi-fiber cable is paid out from the outer housing through rotation of the cable spool.

13. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 10 , further comprising a cable management spool disposed at the axial end of the cable spool.

14. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 13 , wherein the cable management spool is disposed at an opposite side of the axial end of the cable spool from the adapters.

15. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 13 , wherein ports of the adapters face the cable management spool.

16. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 10 , further comprising a sealing member disposed in the first port.

17. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 16 , wherein the sealing member is slotted to enable optical fibers to enter the interior of the outer housing from the first port and to guide the optical fibers towards the adapters.

18. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 16 , wherein the sealing member extends inwardly from a perimeter of the outer housing.

19. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 10 , further comprising a plurality of optical fibers terminated at optical connectors, the optical fibers extending into the interior of the outer housing through the first port, and the optical connectors being plugged into the adapters at the cable spool.

20. The fiber optic enclosure of claim 19 , wherein the optical connectors overhang the cable spool when the optical connectors are plugged into the adapters at the cable spool.
