Abstract

A gasifier is disclosed. The gasifier may include a housing and a refractory system contained within the housing. The refractory system may comprise an upper manifold, an intermediate portion, and a lower manifold. The refractory system may also include columnar cavities. The columnar cavities may extend vertically through the intermediate portion and place the upper manifold in communication with the lower manifold.

Claims (30)

1. A gasifier comprising:

a housing;

a refractory system contained within the housing;

the refractory system comprising an upper manifold, an intermediate portion, and a lower manifold; and

the refractory system comprising a plurality of columnar cavities extending vertically through the intermediate portion and placing the upper manifold in communication with the lower manifold.

2. The gasifier of claim 1 , wherein the upper manifold, intermediate portion, and lower manifold are each formed of refractory.

3. The gasifier of claim 1 , wherein the refractory system comprises a stacked assembly including a plurality of separate sections formed of refractory.

4. The gasifier of claim 3 , wherein the upper manifold forms a first section of the plurality of separate sections.

5. The gasifier of claim 4 , wherein the lower manifold forms a second section of the plurality of separate sections.

6. The gasifier of claim 5 , wherein the intermediate portion comprises a third section of the plurality of separate sections.

7. The gasifier of claim 5 , wherein the intermediate portion further comprises a fourth section of the plurality of separate sections.

8. The gasifier of claim 1 , further comprising a shaft system comprising at least one motor and a shaft, the shaft extending vertically through the housing, the at least one motor connected to rotate the shaft about an axis extending vertically.

9. The gasifier of claim 8 , further comprising a mixing blade connected to rotate with the shaft and mix contents of the upper manifold.

10. The gasifier of claim 9 , further comprising a grate connected to rotate with the shaft and positioned adjacent the lower manifold.

11. The gasifier of claim 10 , further comprising a plurality of balls supported by the grate.

The gasifier of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a base, a lower section resting on and extending upward from the base, an intermediate section resting on and extending upward from the lower section, and an upper section resting on and extending upward from the intermediate section, the lower section comprising a gas outlet and a waste outlet, the upper section comprising a feedstock inlet.

13. The gasifier of claim 12 , wherein the refractory system is contained within the intermediate section.

14. A gasifier comprising:

a housing;

a refractory stack contained within the housing and comprising a plurality of sections formed of refractory, the plurality of sections comprising a lower manifold, at least one intermediate section resting on and extending upward from the lower manifold, and an upper manifold resting on and extending upward from the at least one intermediate section, and

the refractory stack wherein the upper manifold and the at least one intermediate section each comprise a plurality of apertures extending vertically therethrough, the plurality of apertures of the upper manifold aligning with the plurality of apertures of the at least one intermediate section to form a plurality of columnar cavities, each extending from the upper manifold to the lower manifold and placing the upper manifold in communication with the lower manifold.

15. The gasifier of claim 14 , further comprising a plurality of electrical resistance heaters, each delivering heat to a columnar cavity of the plurality of columnar cavities.

16. The gasifier of claim 15 , further comprising a plurality of temperature sensors, each outputting a signal corresponding to the temperature of a columnar cavity of the plurality of columnar cavities.

17. The gasifier of claim 16 , further comprising a plurality of ports, each delivering at least one gas selected from the group consisting of oxygen, oxygen enriched air, and air to a columnar cavity of the plurality of columnar cavities.

18. The gasifier of claim 17 , further comprising a control system monitoring an output of each sensor of the plurality of temperature sensors.

The gasifier of claim 14 , wherein the housing further comprises a base, a lower section resting on and extending upward from the base, an intermediate section resting on and extending upward from the lower section, and an upper section resting on and extending upward from the intermediate section, the lower section comprising a gas outlet and a waste outlet, the upper section comprising a feedstock inlet.

20. The gasifier of claim 19 , further comprising:

a coolant system comprising coolant passing through a cooling jacket encircling the lower section;

a feed system controlling passage of feedstock into the upper section; and

an extraction system pulling gas out of the lower section through the gas outlet.
