Abstract

A network device includes at least one source physical port configured to be coupled to a network, a plurality of egress ports, and a packet processor. The packet processor includes a processing stage configured to implement a logical port assignment mechanism to assign source logical port information to a data packet received via one of the at least one source physical port, wherein the source logical port information is based on characteristics of the data packet, wherein the source logical port information corresponds to a logical entity that is different from any source physical port, and a forwarding engine to determine one or more egress ports for forwarding the data packet based on at least the assigned source logical port information.

Claims (36)

1. A network device, comprising:

at least one source physical port configured to be coupled to a network;

a plurality of egress ports;

a packet processor including:

a) a hardware processor configured to implement a logical port assignment mechanism to assign source logical port information to a data packet received via one of the at least one source physical port, wherein the source logical port information is based on characteristics of the data packet, and wherein the source logical port information corresponds to a logical entity that is different from any source physical port; and

b) a hardware forwarding engine processor configured to determine one or more egress ports for forwarding the data packet based on at least the assigned source logical port information.

2. The network device according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one physical egress port to physically egress the data packets from the network device;

wherein the one or more egress ports are one or more logical egress ports that are one or more logical entities different from the at least one physical egress port.

3. The network device according to claim 2 , wherein the hardware forwarding engine processor includes a bridge egress processor configured to map each of the one or more logical egress ports to one or more physical egress ports.

4. The network device according to claim 3 , wherein the bridge egress processor is configured to apply a tunnel interface to the data packet.

5. The network device according to claim 2 , further comprising a plurality of physical egress ports;

wherein each of at least one physical egress port is an interface for a corresponding plurality of logical egress ports.

6. The network device according to claim 2 , wherein each of at least one of the physical egress ports is an interface for a corresponding plurality of logical egress ports.

7. The network device according to claim 1 , wherein the hardware forwarding engine processor comprises a bridging engine that is configured to learn the source logical port information associated with an address in the data packet.

8. The network device according to claim 1 , wherein the logical port assignment mechanism is configured to provide an indication of the source logical port information in a packet descriptor that is associated with the data packet.

9. The network device according to claim 1 , wherein the source logical port information is related to header information associated with the data packet.

10. The network device according to claim 9 , wherein the source logical port information is related to a media access control address in the header information associated with the data packet.

11. The network device according to claim 9 , wherein the source logical port information is related to a virtual local area network identifier in the header information associated with the data packet.

12. The network device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the packet processor is configured to execute machine-readable instructions.

13. The network device of claim 12 , wherein the hardware processor is configured to execute machine-readable instructions to implement the logical port assignment mechanism.

14. An apparatus, comprising:

a receiver block configured to couple to at least one source physical port;

a transmitter block configured to couple to at least one egress physical port;

a packet processor including:

a) a hardware processor configured to implement a logical port assignment mechanism to assign source logical port information to a data packet received via one of the at least one source physical port, wherein the source logical port information is based on characteristics of the data packet, wherein the source logical port information corresponds to a logical entity that is different from any source physical port; and

b) a hardware forwarding engine processor configured to determine at least one of i) one or more physical egress ports, or ii) one or more logical egress ports for forwarding the data packet based on at least the assigned source logical port information.

15. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein the hardware forwarding engine processor includes a bridge egress processor configured to map each of the one or more logical egress ports to one or more physical egress ports.

16. The network device according to claim 15 , wherein the bridge egress processor is configured to apply a tunnel interface to the data packet.

17. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein a physical egress port is an interface for a corresponding plurality of logical egress ports.

18. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein a physical egress port is an interface for a corresponding plurality of logical egress ports.

19. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein the hardware forwarding engine processor comprises a bridge engine configured to learn the source logical port information associated with an address in the data packet.

20. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein the logical port assignment mechanism is configured to provide an indication of the source logical port information in a packet descriptor that is associated with the data packet.

21. The network device according to claim 14 , wherein the logical port assignment mechanism is configured to assign information related to header information associated with the data packet.

22. The network device according to claim 21 , wherein the logical port assignment mechanism is configured to assign information related to at least one of i) a media access control address in the header information associated with the data packet, or ii) a virtual local area network identifier in the header information associated with the data packet.

23. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the packet processor is configured to execute machine-readable instructions.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the hardware processor is configured to execute machine-readable instructions to implement the logical port assignment mechanism.
