Abstract

A coupler for a quick change rotary cutting tool assembly allowing a cutter to be quickly and releasably coupled to a shank wherein the coupler has a cylindrical portion with a threaded portion to engage the shank and a portion with a transverse groove with undercut walls to form recesses. The cutter has an anchor made as a disk with parallel flats which engage the recesses of the cylindrical portion to releasably secure the cutter to the shank.

Claims (40)

1. A coupler for a quick change rotary cutting tool assembly allowing a cutter having an anchor projecting from a rear stop face of the cutter abutting a centering portion to be quickly and releasably coupled to a shank having a centering portion within an internal mounting bore, the coupler comprising:

a cylindrical portion supporting at a rear end a coaxial male threaded portion for engaging an internal threaded bore of the shank, and

a transversal groove diametrically formed through the cylindrical portion and being open toward a front end surface of the cylindrical portion so as to form an open channel having opposing parallel walls dimensioned to accommodate opposing parallel flat surfaces of an anchor mounted on a rear end of the cutter;

a partial inside surface of a first one of the walls and an angularly opposing partial inside surface of a second one of the walls being undercut toward a lower surface of the groove so as to form a pair of angularly offset recesses at respective opposite ends of the groove that engage a retaining surface of the anchor when the anchor is inserted into the groove and rotated in a locking direction.

2. The coupler according to claim 1 , wherein the anchor is made as a disk trimmed on both sides to form arms and parallel flats.

3. The coupler according to claim 1 , wherein chamfers are provided along edges of the groove adjacent the front end surface of the cylindrical portion, for facilitating self-alignment of a replacement cutter within the groove.

4. The coupler according to claim 1 , wherein said centering portion of the cutter and the centering portion of the shank are conical in shape.

5. The coupler according to claim 1 , comprising an active fluted portion coupled to a short cylindrical portion having at least two opposing parallel flats for accommodating spanner.

6. The coupler according to claim 1 , being of a type chosen from the group of: face mill, rounded tip mill, slitting mill, drill, reamer, or any other replaceable tip for milling, drilling, reaming or other metal cutting applications that use rotary cutting tools.

7. The coupler according to claim 1 , wherein: the cylindrical portion and the male threaded portion are of equal diameter and are provided with an external thread over an entire length thereof, and the transversal groove and recesses are formed in the threaded portion.

8. The coupler according to claim 7 , being formed from a headless set-screw by cutting said transversal groove and recesses on a wire EDM machine.

9. The coupler according to claim 1 , being provided with rear drive means accessible through longitudinally passing bore made in the shank.

10. The coupler according to claim 9 , wherein said drive means is chosen from the group of: flat screwdriver slot, Philips crossed screwdriver slot, Allen key hexagon socket, and star shaped socket.

11. A quick change rotary cutting tool assembly comprising:

a shank having a centering portion within an internal mounting bore;

a cutter having an anchor projecting from a rear stop face abutting a centering portion to be quickly and releasably coupled to the shank; and

a coupler according to claim 10 ,

wherein the shank comprises:

an internal mounting bore situated at a front end thereof so as to form an annular front edge that serves as a stop face,

a centering portion that is complementary to a centering portion of the cutter at a front end of the internal bore,

a free cavity rearward of the centering portion of sufficient depth to accommodate the cylindrical portion of the coupler, and

a female threaded bore rearward of the free cavity sized to accept the male threaded portion of the coupler.

12. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein an internal diameter of the free cavity is made in close tolerance to the diameter of the cylindrical portion of the coupler.

13. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the anchor is made as a disk trimmed on both sides to form a pair of curved retaining arms and parallel anchor flats.

14. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 13 , wherein chamfers are provided along edges of the anchor flats and along the front edges of the groove of the coupler, for facilitating self-alignment of a replacement cutter within the groove.

15. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the cutter includes an active fluted portion coupled to a short cylindrical portion.

16. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 14 , wherein the cylindrical portion is equipped with at least two opposing parallel flats for allowing the insert to be gripped by a spanner.

17. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the cutter is of type chosen from the group of: face mill, rounded tip mill, slitting mill, drill, reamer, or any other replaceable tip for milling, drilling, reaming or other metal cutting applications that use rotary cutting tools.

18. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein upon assembly of the cutting tool by insertion of the coupler into the mounting hole of the shank, followed by insertion of the cutter anchor into the groove of the coupler, and rotation in the locking direction, both the stop face and centering portion of the cutter are simultaneously tightened against the stop face and the centering portion of the shank.

19. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the anchor is attached to an adapter having an external male thread for threadably engaging an internal thread of the cutter.

20. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 19 , wherein the adapter is made of high tensile strength steel.

21. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the centering portion of the cutter and the shank are conical in shape.

22. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 21 , further including a conical centering sleeve made of a resilient material for filling a gap formed between the conical centering portion of the cutter and the conical centering portion of the shank.

23. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein:

the cylindrical portion and the male threaded portion of the coupler are of equal diameter and are provided with an external thread over an entire length thereof,

the transversal groove and recesses are formed in the threaded portion, and

the shank has a threaded portion of sufficient length to accommodate the entire length of the coupler.

24. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 23 , wherein said coupler is formed from a headless set-screw by cutting said transversal groove and recesses on a wire EDM machine.

25. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 11 , wherein said coupler is provided with rear drive means accessible through longitudinally passing bore made in the shank.

26. The quick change rotary cutting tool assembly according to claim 25 , wherein said drive means are chosen from the list of, flat screwdriver slot, Philips crossed screwdriver slot, Allen key hexagon socket, and star shaped socket.
