Abstract

Disclosed are apparatuses and methods for use thereof for loading bulk material into freight containers. One apparatus comprises a hopper configured to receive bulk material that is sized and shaped to be at least partially enclosable by a container to occupy a substantial volume of the container and a ram. The ram comprises a plate and a driver configured to move the plate from a back end of the hopper to an open end of the hopper to expel material into a container. Another apparatus comprises a hopper configured to receive bulk material that is sized and shaped to be at least partially enclosable by a container to occupy a substantial volume of the container and a reciprocating conveyor floor system. Optionally, a chute can be employed in combination with a loader vehicle to quickly and efficiently load bulk material into a container.

Claims (12)

1. A system for loading bulk material into a shipping container comprising:

a channel having a proximal section with an open proximal end and a distal section with an open distal end, wherein said proximal section is positioned and configured for the deposition of bulk material thereinto and said distal section is configured for receipt within substantially the entire length of said container;

a self-propelled loader vehicle selected so as to be drivable through and propel itself through said open proximal end into said channel and operable within said channel to push material deposited in said proximal section of said channel toward and through its open distal end;

wherein the open proximal end is positioned so as to be accessible to the self-propelled loader vehicle and the distal section end is positioned to enable the backing of the container into surrounding engagement of the distal section.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said distal section is cantilevered.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein said distal section is supported by collapsible legs.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said channel has side walls of a height substantially corresponding to the interior height of said container.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein said channel has a floor of a width substantially corresponding to the interior width of said container.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the bulk material consists essentially of heavy metal scrap material including heavy metal scrap over 6′ in length.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the shipping container is an ISO standard shipping container having a 7′ 7¾″ internal width, an external length and an internal height, and the channel comprises:

a bottom having an external width slightly less than the 7′ 7¾″ internal width of the ISO standard shipping container to thereby allow the bottom to fit within the ISO standard shipping container, and the bottom having a length at least as long as the external length of the ISO standard container,

opposing side walls having an external height less than the internal height of the ISO standard shipping container to thereby allow the sides walls to fit within the ISO standard shipping container.
