Abstract

Compatibility and consolidation analyses can be performed on a collection of systems to evaluate the 1-to-1 compatibility of every source-target pair, evaluate the multi-dimensional compatibility of specific transfer sets, and to determine the best consolidation solution based on various constraints including the compatibility scores of the transfer sets. The analyses can be done together or be performed independently. These analyses are based on collected system data related to their technical configuration, business factors and workloads. Differential rule sets and workload compatibility algorithms are used to evaluate the compatibility of systems. The technical configuration, business and workload related compatibility results are combined to create an overall compatibility assessment. These results are visually represented using color coded scorecard maps.

Claims (40)

1. A method for determining a consolidation solution for a plurality of computer systems, said method comprising:

generating a first candidate consolidation solution using compatibilities between said plurality of computer systems, said first consolidation solution comprising one or more transfer sets, each transfer set indicating one or more of said computer systems capable of being transferred to a target computer system;

generating at least one additional candidate consolidation solution for the same plurality of computer systems by varying at least one parameter used in selecting corresponding transfer sets for each additional consolidation solution;

providing a plurality of candidate consolidation solutions using said first candidate consolidation solution and said at least one additional consolidation solution;

collectively evaluating said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions against each other according to at least one criterion and selecting a desired one of said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions; and

providing said desired one as said consolidation solution for said plurality of computer systems.

2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising removing computer systems associated with a first transfer set prior to obtaining an additional transfer set for one of said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions.

3. The method according to claim 1 comprising eliminating compatibility scores that do not meet a predefined threshold from a data set used to determine said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions.

4. The method according to claim 3 wherein said predefined threshold is a minimum compatibility score.

5. The method according to claim 1 comprising defining one or more of a minimum number of transfers per transfer set and a maximum number of transfers per transfer set.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein said determining is performed according to a combinatorial optimization problem.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein said optimization problem is solved through one or more heuristic algorithms.

8. The method according to claim 1 further comprising obtaining an indication of a transfer type, said transfer type being either virtualization or stacking.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein said compatibilities are determined using a configuration compatibility score and a workload compatibility score.

10. A method for determining compatibilities for a plurality of computer systems, said method comprising:

obtaining a transfer set indicating a plurality of said computer systems capable of being transferred to a target computer system;

evaluating compatibilities of said plurality of said computer systems against said target computer system to obtain a first set of compatibility scores;

evaluating compatibilities of each other of said plurality of said computer systems against each other of said plurality of said computer systems to obtain a second set of compatibility scores; and

computing an overall compatibility score for said transfer set using at least said first and second sets of compatibility scores.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein said first compatibility score is computed by separately evaluating each said plurality of computer systems against said target computer system using a rule set defining one or more parameters indicative of compatibility.

12. The method according to claim 11 further comprising applying mutex flags to account for multiple instances of the same match.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein said first compatibility score is computed by applying penalty weights associated with matched rule items and taking said mutex flags into consideration if necessary.

14. The method according to claim 10 wherein said second compatibility score is computed by separately evaluating each of said plurality of computer systems against said target computer system using a rule set defining one or more parameters indicative of compatibility.

15. The method according to claim 14 further comprising applying mutex flags to account for multiple instances of the same match.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein said second compatibility score is computed by applying penalty weights associated with matched rule items and taking said mutex flags into consideration if necessary.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for determining compatibilities for a plurality of computer systems, said computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

obtaining a transfer set indicating a plurality of said computer systems capable of being transferred to a target computer system;

evaluating compatibilities of said plurality of said computer systems against said target computer system to obtain a first set of compatibility scores;

evaluating compatibilities of each of said plurality of said computer systems against each other of said plurality of said computer systems to obtain a second set of compatibility scores; and

computing an overall compatibility score for said transfer set using at least said first and second sets of compatibility scores.

18. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer executable instructions for determining a consolidation solution, said computer executable instructions comprising instructions for:

generating a first candidate consolidation solution using compatibilities between said plurality of computer systems, said first consolidation solution comprising one or more transfer sets, each transfer set indicating one or more of said computer systems capable of being transferred to a target computer system;

generating at least one additional candidate consolidation solution for the same plurality of computer systems by varying at least one parameter used in selecting corresponding transfer sets for each additional consolidation solution;

providing a plurality of candidate consolidation solutions using said first candidate consolidation solution and said at least one additional consolidation solution;

collectively evaluating said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions against each other according to at least one criterion and selecting a desired one of said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions; and

providing said desired one as said consolidation solution for said plurality of computer systems.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 18 , further comprising instructions for: removing computer systems associated with a first transfer set prior to obtaining an additional transfer set for one of said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 18 , further comprising instructions for eliminating compatibility scores that do not meet a predefined threshold from a data set used to determine said plurality of candidate consolidation solutions.

The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 17 wherein said first compatibility score is computed by separately evaluating each said plurality of computer systems against said target computer system using a rule set defining one or more parameters indicative of compatibility.

The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 10 wherein said second compatibility score is computed by separately evaluating each of said plurality of computer systems against said target computer system using a rule set defining one or more parameters indicative of compatibility.
