Abstract

A multi-phase electric motor comprises a stator comprising a plurality of wire coils surrounding a non-magnetizable core; a rotor with permanent magnets embedded therein, the rotor being disposed adjacent to the stator, the rotor being mounted on a rotatable drive shaft; a power source; a position sensor operably connected to the rotor; and a control circuit operably connected to the power source, the position sensor, and the wire coils, for controlling distribution of electrical energy to the wire coils. In this motor the control mechanism transfers electrical charge from a first coil to a second coil.

Claims (13)

1. An electric motor comprising:

a first rotor configured to rotate in a first rotational plane, the first rotor comprising at least a first pair of magnets, each magnet of the first pair of magnets comprising first and second poles oriented along a respective first magnet axis perpendicular to the rotational plane, each magnet of the first pair of magnets having a length L along the first magnet axis, each magnet of the first pair of magnets having a width W in a direction perpendicular to the first magnet axis, each magnet of the first pair of magnets being separated from the other magnet of the first pair of magnets on the first rotor by a distance A;

a second rotor configured to rotate in a second rotational plane parallel to the first rotational plane, the second rotor comprising at least a second pair of magnets, each magnet of the second pair of magnets comprising first and second poles oriented along a respective second magnet axis perpendicular to the second rotational plane, each magnet of the second pair of magnets having a length L along the second magnet axis, each magnet of the second pair of magnets having a width W in a direction perpendicular to the second magnet axis, each magnet of the second pair of magnets being separated from the other magnet of the second pair of magnets on the second rotor by a distance A; and

a stator comprising a coil having a core with a height HC, the coil being configured in the electric motor so that the coil can exert a magnetic field on the first pair of magnets as the first pair of magnets rotate in the first rotor by the coil and, later, on the second pair of magnets as the second pair of magnets rotate in the second rotor by the coil;

wherein W≦A, and L≧A.

2. The electric motor of claim 1 , wherein the first and second pairs of magnets are separated, along the first and second magnet axes, by a distance B, and B≦A.

3. The electric motor of claim 1 , wherein the first and second rotors are disposed adjacent to the stator and mounted on a rotatable drive shaft, the electric motor comprising:

a power source;

a position sensor operably connected to the rotor; and

a control circuit operably connected to the power source, the position sensor, and the coil, and configured to transfer electrical charge from the coil to a different coil of the stator.

4. The electric motor of claim 1 , wherein a coil opening of the coil has a width C in a direction perpendicular to the first and second magnet axes, and C≧W.

5. The electric motor of claim 1 , wherein, each magnet of the first and second pairs of magnets has a height HM in the first and second rotational planes, and HM≧HC.

6. The electric motor of claim 1 , wherein the first and second pairs of magnets are separated, along the first and second magnet axes, by a distance B, a coil opening of the coil has a width C in a direction perpendicular to the first and second magnet axes, and each magnet of the first and second pairs of magnets has a height HM in the first and second rotational planes, and B≦A, C≧W, and HM≧HC.
