Abstract

A method includes receiving, at a transmit site, a first stream of packets addressed to an end user device in a first address space. The first stream of packets is encapsulated to form a second stream of packets addressed in a second address space. A first packet of the second stream of packets is assigned to a first radio frequency channel of a plurality of radio frequency channels. A second packet of the second stream of packets is assigned to a second radio frequency channel of the plurality of radio frequency channels. The first packet is transmitted via the first radio frequency channel and, in parallel, the second packet is transmitted via the second radio frequency channel.

Claims (28)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a cable modem, multiple data streams from a transmit device via a group of channels of a cable network having multiple radio frequency channels, wherein the group of channels supports traffic to a plurality of destinations; and

recombining, at the cable modem, the multiple data streams to form a combined data stream.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each channel in the group of channels is a downstream channel.

3. An apparatus comprising:

a modem:

receiving multiple data streams via a group of channels of a cable network having multiple radio frequency channels, the group of channels supporting connections with a plurality of destinations and the cable network comprising a hybrid fiber-coaxial network or a coaxial network; and

recombining the multiple data streams to form a combined data stream that includes internet protocol traffic.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the modem comprises a cable modem.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein data to a first destination of the plurality of destinations is communicated via one or more first channels of the group of channels and wherein data to a second destination of the plurality of destinations is communicated via one or more second channels of the group of channels.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein each of the multiple data streams has a bit rate that is lower than a bit rate of a transmit stream, and wherein the combined data stream has a bit rate equal to the bit rate of the transmit stream.

7. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the modem comprises at least one demodulator.

8. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein packets received via the group of channels include sequence numbers, and wherein the modem is further selectively re-sequences the received packets based on the sequence numbers.

9. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein at least two channels of the group of channels are useable by a particular subscriber.

10. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the modem comprises a cable modem.

11. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein each channel in the group of channels is a downstream channel.

12. An apparatus comprising:

a cable modem:

receiving multiple quadrature amplitude modulated data streams via a group of channels of a cable network having multiple radio frequency channels, the group of channels supporting traffic to a plurality of destinations and the cable network comprising a hybrid fiber-coaxial network or a coaxial network; and

recombining the multiple data streams to form a combined data stream that includes internet protocol traffic.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the cable modem comprises one or more analog-to-digital converters.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the cable modem comprises one or more band pass filters.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the cable modem comprises an Ethernet interface.

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein each channel in the group of channels is a downstream channel.

17. A method comprising:

receiving, at a cable modem, multiple quadrature amplitude modulated data streams via a group of channels of a cable network having multiple radio frequency channels, the group of channels supporting traffic to a plurality of destinations and the cable network comprising a hybrid fiber-coaxial network or a coaxial network; and

recombining, at the cable modem, the multiple data streams to form a combined data stream that includes internet protocol traffic.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein each channel in the group of channels is a downstream channel.
