Abstract

A method and apparatus for automating some of the tasks that heretofore required operator action at headland turns or similar events are provided. The present invention automates operation of lift assist wheels and/or gull wings, such as those found on a stack-fold implement, based on the position of the tractor hitch to which the implement is coupled. An operator may control the position of the implement, such as at a headland turn, by raising and lowering the tractor hitch using a remote control. The invention enables the planter to compare the tractor hitch position relative to an implement position and control operation of the implement accordingly without additional user inputs.

Claims (12)

1. A farm implement having a toolbar configured to be coupled to a towing vehicle, and a bulk fill hopper mounted to a frame that is supported by a lift wheel assembly, a pair of gull wings, and a hydraulic system for raising and lowering the lift wheel assembly and the gull wings, comprising:

a connector for coupling the toolbar to a hitch of the towing vehicle;

an ISOBUS connection that facilitates communication with remotes for controlling hydraulic pressure in the hydraulic system;

a first electrical input that receives a hitch position signal from the towing vehicle;

a second electrical input that receives a frame position signal;

an electronic control unit (ECU) that receives the hitch position and the frame position signals and being configured to:

provide a first command signal to the remotes of the towing vehicle via the ISOBUS connection in response to the hitch position and the frame position signals to automatically activate the lift wheel assembly to maintain the frame in a level position as the vertical position of the hitch changes; and

provide a command signal to the remotes of the towing vehicle via the ISOBUS connection to raise and lower the gull wings in response to the hitch position signal.

2. The farm implement of claim 1 wherein an operator input to raise or lower the hitch automatically causes positioning of the gull wings and the lift wheel assembly.

3. The farm implement of claim 2 wherein the ECU provides a go-to-float command signal to the remotes of the towing vehicle when the hitch position signal indicates that the hitch is in a fully lowered position, and wherein the go-to-float command signal commands the remotes to allow the gull wings to float so as to respond to changes in field contours.

4. The farm implement of claim 2 wherein the ECU provides a retract gull wings command signal to the remotes of the towing vehicle when the hitch position signal indicates that the hitch is in a raised position.

5. The farm implement of claim 1 wherein the first electrical input is part of the ISOBUS connection.
