Abstract

An apparatus for determining an optimal amount of tissue compression for applying a surgical element to tissue is disclosed. The apparatus includes a device for compressing tissue which supports a measuring device adapted to detect a tissue parameter upon the compression of tissue. The measuring device communicates with an indicator. Upon compressing tissue, when the measuring device determines that the compressed tissue parameter reaches a predetermined threshold, the measuring device sends a signal to the indicator such that the indicator provides an indication to a surgeon that the threshold has been reached. The measuring device may include a load cell and the tissue parameter may be a viscoelastic reactive force of the tissue per unit time.

Claims (21)

1. A method for determining an optimal compression of tissue to apply a surgical element to the tissue, the method comprising:

measuring an initial thickness of the tissue;

applying a load to the tissue;

determining when a physiological event occurs in the tissue in response to the load applied;

measuring the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event; and

modulating a surgical instrument based upon the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the load to the tissue occurs in a stepwise manner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein modulating the surgical instrument includes changing a staple size.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein modulating the surgical instrument includes changing a size of a gap between a stapler cartridge and an anvil.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring the initial thickness of the tissue includes determining the thickness of the tissue with a caliper.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event includes determining the thickness of the tissue with a caliper.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining when the physiological event occurs in the tissue is determined visually.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining when the physiological event occurs in the tissue includes determining when hemostasis of the tissue occurs.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining when the physiological event occurs in the tissue includes determining when leakage of fluid from the tissue occurs.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 60 to 80 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue when the tissue is gastrointestinal tissue.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 60 to 70 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue when the tissue is small intestinal tissue.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 65 to 75 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue when the tissue is stomach tissue.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 70 to 80 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue when the tissue is colonic tissue.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 80 to 85 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising fusing a tissue section in a sub mucosa section of the tissue, and wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 60 to 90 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the thickness of the tissue at the physiological event is 90 percent of the initial thickness of the tissue.
